Academic research usually focuses on something more fundamental and long term rather than practical and short term.  This could be your first discussion point, i. e. what an academic research should focus on.  If the mega event does not provide any value for an academic research, then it could be a distraction for studying other more important event that is usually over looked for their size.  You can start your second discussion point by asking yourself following questions.  Does academic research usually focused on mega events?
