Resources for Writing a Literature Review

文献写作资源
Compiled by Dr. Diana Kelly

The following resources have been gathered from universities around the world to assist you in the development and writing of your literature review for this module.  Some of the resources are addressing the literature review as it would appear in a thesis or dissertation – a much longer lit review than you’ll be doing for this module.

However, the basic principles are the same:

1) Start with a question you want to answer.  以一个你想回答的问题开头。

It should be a fairly specific question because this is a short literature review of 3,000 words (approximately 12 pages of text, double-spaced at 12 point font).  Some specific areas of practice were presented in the handout provided at our Module 8 meeting in October:  e-learning, portfolio assessments, Problem-Based Learning,

2) Look for literature that addresses this question.  寻找与你问题相关的文献。

You may find conflicting research on your topic. That’s not a problem – it just means that you need to address the reasons for conflicting evidence.

3) Organise your literature into topic areas.  把你文献按话题领域分组。

It’s best to develop an outline, and modify it after you’ve completed your literature search and reading.

4) Evaluate the literature you’ve read.对你读过的文献进行评价。

– what was good about the research that was done, and are there any faults with the research that you’ve read?  (Eg: was the sample size too small to reach valid conclusions?)

5) Write the literature review:写文献综述。
a. Introduction:  what question are you addressing and why
b. Body:  outline and critical appraisal of literature you surveyed.
c. Conclusions:  Did you find the answer you were looking for?  Did it surprise you? Does more research need to be done in this area? Does this literature review raise any new questions?

6) Read and revise the literature review:文献综述的修改。
a. Does the language flow well?  Is it clearly written? Is the grammar, spelling and punctuation correct?
b. Does the structure of the literature review make sense?  Do topics flow naturally from one to the next, building on the question you posed in the introduction?
c. Do the conclusions make sense, after re-reading the review?

7) Double-check that your references are consistent, using the Harvard System.确认两次你的文献前后是否一致。
Here is an online guide:  http://www.tvu.ac.uk/lrs/guides/harvard.html
a. Check for references throughout the body of your Literature Review.
b. Check for formatting of the Reference list.
c. Ensure that all references used in the body of your paper are included in the Reference list at the end – AND ensure that all references in your Reference list were actually used in the body of the paper.

In addition to the excellent resources listed in the Guidelines for Module 8 (page 51 of the Programme Handbook 2004-05 for the MA in Academic Practice), here are a few more books that I’ve found very useful.
