This is the first book I've felt compelled to write a review for. By the end of chapter 1, I was already using what I had learned to inject some much needed discipline into my current project. In my quest to become a proficient and competent data miner, this book has helped me move forward a good deal.

The cookbook format is immediately useful, but there is plenty of information that helps you understand *why* you're doing what you're doing. This book essentially lays out a methodology for data mining projects. I've worked with data mining experts before and this book is the next best thing to having one sitting next to you.

If you use SPSS Modeler, this book is a no-brainer. If you use some other modeling software, I suspect you'll still get plenty out of it. You'll just have to translate the common sense advice to work with your tool of choice.
