About the author: Dr. Koen Byttebier is professor of law at the Department of Economic Law of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (of which he is also the head of department) since 1984. He has written several textbooks and numerous articles in his chosen field of specialization and speaks regularly at national and international conferences. He conceived and series editor of the Publications of the Centre for Economic Law (Maklu/Kluwer). He is on the editorial board of several law magazines. As a practicing lawyer, he is a member of the Belgian law firm "Everest". In his law practice, he esp. advises national and / or Flemish governmental agencies for which he has done all kinds of re-structuring operations, written drafts of laws of Parliament and / or decrees and given legal opinions on several matters of law.
About this book:
This book presents a thorough and critical evaluation of the monetary and financial system prevalent in Western economies. Further, it seeks to explain why this system so often leads to financial crises and why they have been dealt with unsatisfactorily in the past.
In order to provide answers to these questions, the book investigates the monetary and financial system from a multidisciplinary perspective, with a strong focus on the ethical value choices which throughout history have shaped the monetary and financial legal system. In the closing chapters, the book also advances a detailed proposal for a New Global Monetary Order, one based on altruism, as an alternative to the neoliberal values dominant today.
Although the book is initiated by a legal scholar, it nevertheless aims to be truly multi- and interdisciplinary. The book therefor welcomes and will incorporate all relevant disciplines, including law, economics, philosophy, ethics, religion, psychology, sociology, anthropology etc.
