小弟打算申请UNSW finance方向的researh master， 需要写一个大概的research proposal, 本人对几个方向都比较感兴趣： Asset pricing model, hedge fund, risk management, portfolio management, international finance, exchange rate. 主要有这么几个问题：

1. 这个research proposal 要写得宽泛些好，还是集中到一个方向更好？
2. 综合来讲，以上这些方向哪些更有潜力和发展前途？

你申请master之前没有上过类似 research method 之类的课吗
proposal的题目越细越好 越小越好
你那么多方向里 选一个方向的某一个小小的问题即可
再由这个小小的问题延伸2-3个小问题做为research questions
AUS或NZ的 master 大多做empirical study  （个别做case study ） 选什么方向都是为今后研究做个准备 告诉你怎么做研究罢了 虽比US差当然比GB的强多了

补充点
proposal 别不当回事 实际上是重中之重 完成的好 论文一半就搞定了 完成的差 做到后面都不知道自己在做什么 也不知道怎么做 抱着干时间图便宜省学费的态度去赶 只会自欺欺人到最后无尽的返工甚至改数据.... - -! 周围例子太多了 祝LZ好运

刚刚整理完其他帖子，见chen兄已经对楼主主题进行那个了答复，甚是完整。我仅仅做一补充活跃气氛。
首先声明我个人没有“旅外”经历。但是对学术还是有那么一点点嗅觉（这好像有点“卖瓜”了）。
正如“chen4”所言，您的更应该集中在小的细化的问题上，要小题大作，不是说您做不了大问题，因为没人相信您能够做得了或是做得好大问题。
另外国外对一名优秀学术人的评价更多是要看其所研究的“专著性”，一个热衷潮流的“作家”是难以企及集中一个方向做几十年研究的学者所获得的“业内认同”。
除了对所研究的问题加以严谨外，更为重要的是在整个简短proposal的研究逻辑阐述上。
合理的研究框架将为您省下大部分的时间，并规避后续“乱从书中取真经”的烦恼。

需要提醒您的是，对于一个已经确定的研究课题，一定要问自己如下几个问题：问题可行？可操作？如何操作？结果会怎样？

我现在在阿大读coursework的master of accting and finance. 没有research methodology 之类的课程。脑子里一点头绪也没有, 打算是关于hedge fund的risk control methods一类的。但是不知如何下笔。

Step 3: Prepare a research proposal
PhD applicants
At UNSW and other Australian universities, it is standard practice to ask applicants to submit a research proposal. The research proposal is used by the School to determine whether it is possible to provide adequate supervision and resources to support your research. If you are accepted into the program, the topic may be reviewed or refined during the course of your enrolment. The proposal is also used to assess your capacity to undertake research. It should demonstrate:

• Clear aims and objectives
• Some consideration of method
• A good command of the English language
• That you are capable of independent and critical thinking

Your research proposal should be 3-7 pages in length and include:

• A discussion of the issues you would like to explore (why it is important and interesting)
• The background literature supporting your project
• An explanation of the way your project would significantly add to the understanding of the topic
• A bibliography of your background literature

MPhil applicants
MPhil applicants may submit a brief research proposal which indicates their area of interest.

现实又实用的方法就是查找您所要申请的导师的相关文章。

对于proposal，不同的人会有不同的看法，但是最基本的是要有问题，有问题的研究思路，也就是基本框架，
其所表达的最重要的是要让读者知道您想做什么怎么做（这要求对于文献有足够的了解！）。

查阅相关导师的文献使得您能够对该为老师的基本评定标准有一个了解，也方便您有效地开展您的proposal。

当然您指出的研究方法，一般不是书本上能够学到的，就如同基本计量学会告诉您方法，但是不会教您如何运用到实践中，而且您所申请的金融类对于方法上一直是创新又创新。

所以您有必要对该位导师的研究逻辑和应用方法有一了解，同时拓展您的知识面（主要还是在于文献）。

补充下：proposal应该务实些，就如同我上面所说，要清楚别人做过什么，自己能做什么。
