This note presents a commodity import price index for China. We adopt a fixed weight (Lespreyres) method so that the changes in the index can be attributed solely to price changes. We find that the index has a close relationship with China's producer price index, which suggests that the index could be used as a good indicator to gauge the pass-through effect from commodity import prices to
China's producer prices. Using this index and adjusting for other demand factors, we find that a 10% increase in China’s commodity import price will likely lead to a 1.8% increase in PPI, which in turn leads to a 0.36% increase in China's non-food consumer prices.
