This book focuses on the causes of starvation in general and famines in particular. The traditional analysis of famines is shown to be fundamentally defective, and the author develops an alternative analysis. The Nobel Laureate (1998) Amartya Sen needs no introduction. But poverty and starvation are better known than he is. Better still, the author is in full realisation of this fact. So, no self-elevating adjectives or poignant criticism can be found in the book. The book focuses on starvation in general and famines in particular. At the very outset, Amartya comes out to be a Keynesian in approach rather than a classicist. As his critics would put it - "This paper is not concerned with long-term food policy". This is true to some extent but the author here is trying to fit in a jigsaw puzzle with two or more puzzles thrown in at once.

内容简介

本书的重点是关于饥饿的一般原因和饥荒的具体原因。第1章从一般意义上引入了基本方法，包括对“权利体系”分析。之所以在详细论述贫穷概念之前就进行这一分析，是因为“权利方法”是这本著作的核心。第2章和第3章研究了关于贫困的概念和度量问题。第4章从一般意义上论述了饥饿这一特殊问题。第5章分析“权利方法”。随后几章分析了发生在世界不同地方的一些案例：1943年的孟加拉大饥荒（第6章）、1973至1975年的埃塞俄比亚饥荒（第7章）、70年代时期非洲萨赫勒地区的饥荒（第8章）以及1974年的孟加拉国饥荒（第9章）；第10章是关于“权利方法”的总结，即在具体层面上分析了一般贫困与权利体系的联系。
