These notes are designed to be a fairly comprehensive introduction to modern computational
economics. Consistent with the idea that one should understand the tools you are using, I have
chosen to structure the presentation by introducing key mathematical ideas first – root finding for
nonlinear equations, nonlinear optimization, numerical differentiation and integration, functional
approximation – and then discuss examples of how to use them to solve economic models. Solving
an economic model is often a combination of these procedures.
