Ideally, you would know everything.

Obviously, that is impossible, so concentrate on the following areas:
*know the company- its accounting, its products and services, its management, its selling practices, its ability to manage its own business, its relations with customers and suppliers, its R&D capabilities, and so forth.
*know the industry- the customers, the competitors, the international picture, the emerging names, the new trends and products, the companies in trouble.
*know what the government thinks about the company and the industry.
*know what the market thinks about the company and the industry.
*know what your clients are looking for in terms of investment ideas."

"Where do I get the info to write one?

*Annual reports and official filings, especially the 10-k and 10-q reports required b the SEC,are vitally important public documents. You must know these data thoroughly. Read every footnote very carefully- the important warning signs are often there, but not highlighted.
*Other official filings(8-k,13-d etc.) are also very important because they can indicate changes within the company that would affect investors' perceptions.
*Company press releases are essential for earnings and other news.
*Company visits are essential, not only to meet senior personnel and learn about the business at first hand but also to get a sense of the "feel" of the place.
*Industry studies by official bodies or third-party entities can provide valuable comparative material.
*Government sources( Census Bureau, Department of the Treasury, Federal Reserve, etc.)  can give you background data for long-term modeling.
