Optional: Robin Bade & Michael Parkin, Foundations of Economics, 2nd Edition. Pearson Addison-Wesley, 2004. Hal R. Varian, Intermediate Microeconomics a modern approach, 6th ed. W.W. Norton.

Prerequisites:
Although it is an elementary course of economics, most students will find it quite difficult to understand if they have no bases of college mathematics. Thus the college mathematics or related courses is required before taking this course.

Course objectives:
This course is designed to open students’ eye to the “economic way of thinking” and to help them gain insights into how the economy work and how it might be made to work better. This semester we will focus on microeconomic theory, which is the study of the choices individuals and businesses make, the way those choices interact in the markets, and the influence of governments.
Preparing for Class
In order to fully understand the key points conveyed in lectures, students should preview the text in advance and if possible, it is highly advised for students to survey the online materials accompanied to this course before the class, since there is a comprehensive online learning environment including tutorials and quizzes, daily news updates, and more, which is great helpful to understand the contents of lectures.

Grading
The final grade includes four parts:

Midterm exam:
20%
Final exam:
60%

At the beginning of each lecture there will be a short quiz about 5 to 10 minutes, which will randomly have some students to answer some questions related to key points covered by previous lectures.

The homework assignments include the worksheets hand out during the class and some review questions (even numbers) corresponding to the chapters covered in lectures, they are due the beginning of the each next lecture.

Policies
Any excuses for the missing of exams and quizzes are not accepted unless the proof of emergency such as serious illness can be presented in advance.

Academic dishonesty
Academic dishonesty by the student code of conduct includes cheating on the assignments or exams; plagiarizing; altering; forging, or misusing a University academic record; taking, acquiring, or using test materials without faculty permission; and acting alone or in cooperation with another to enhance a grade, etc. A minimum penalty for academic dishonesty is a grade of zero. Other penalties may include an F in course and a complaint to university authorities so that they act consequently with the corresponding university policy.
