Data fromdevelopingeconomiesindicatethattheearlierphasesofeconomic
development tendtobe characterized byincreasingincomeinequality, as those
engagedinthesmallbutgrowingmodernsectoroftheeconomypullawayfrom
thosestillleftinagriculture andothersubsistence activities. *Thedegreeofinequalityreachesa peak,however, andthendiminishes withfurther development, as the
modernsectorcomestodominatethe
economyandperhapsmoreso ifitcreates
roomforredistributive activity. Theresulting "Kuznetscurve"hasbeenthesubject
ofmuchempirical researchanddiscussionwithindevelopment economics.
