Welcome to RodneyFort’s Sports Business Data Pages.
Updated Often.
I began the collection offered here in 1982 when Roger Noll hiredme as a graduate student to work on Selig v. US. To the bestof my knowledge and ability, they are the most complete data on the economicsand business of U.S. pro sports leagues in existence. I say that so thateverybody will feel challenged to prove me wrong and add to the data (as manyof you already have!).
Please notify me if you find errors or know of sources that wouldcomplete anything that is missing. I'm glad to credit you when you do so.
Some have suggested that I'm missing a profit opportunity bysimply posting these data free-of-charge. To them, I paraphrase: The truth shall set you free, but only if you can get the data to judge thetruth. And here they are. (Besides, some of these data may beproprietary and their presence here is simply tolerated by their originators;surely their wrath would descend on me if I went for any money).
You’ll have to find stuff yourself. I used to lay itall out in webpage point and click/download formats but that has now proven tootime consuming for me. So I’m taking the easiest route for me thatstill should make it approachable for you.
I still do transform them (almost) all to Word or Excel for you.
Good luck. And you can always email me if you havequestions. rodfort@umich.edu
A Bit of a Roadmap
You are now at my Box where I have stored the data. Thetop level of folders are organized as follows:
- GeneralData
- NCAACollege
- NorthAmericanProLeagues
- WorldFootball&MLS
Each has a “Documents Repository” folder. For a flavor of the typeof documents in the repositories, here is what is in theNorthAmericanProLeagues repository: copies of CBAs, Congressional testimony, league constitutions, a collection of economic impact assessments, somehistorical docs, a variety of documents on some important legal proceedings,MLB inter-league agreements, some historical commissioned reports, and a funcollection of stock certificates. The repositories for the other categorieshold similar collections.
NorthAmericanProLeagues are MLB, NBA, NFL, and NHL. I put MLS withWorld Football because…well, that just made sense to me and the small amount ofdata I have on soccer doesn’t always follow the same categories.
There are occasioinal MSWord “ReadMe” documents where I thoughtthey might be useful.
The major sections bulleted above are organized as follows.
GeneralData: This is “the rest of the stuff”, or maybe theJeopardy Potpourri category.
· Golf
· MinorLeagueBaseball
· NASCAR
· Revenues
· Tennis
· TVRatingsRightsFees
· Various”Top”Lists
· WNBA
· Z-DocumentsRepository
NCAACollege: The next level of folders is organized by similartopic, and inside that by data source since that is usually how people requestthem from me:
- Attendance-RegularSeason
- ConferenceFinalStandings
- PostSeason
- Revenues&Expenses
- Salaries
- TicketPrices
- Z-DocumentsRepository
NorthAmericanProLeagues: The next level of folders is organized bydata league; MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL, and a common Z-DocumentsRepository across allof the leagues. The data in each leaguefolder are the same for each league:
- Attendance
- Fan Cost Index
- Income and Expenses
- Manager/Coach/GM Salaries
- Payroll
- Rival Leagues
- Player Salaries
- Team Moves
- Team Values and Sale Prices
- Ticket Prices
- TV Revenue
- Winning Percentages
WorldFootball&MLS: I have very little here, but what I havegoes like this:
· Finishes
· IncomeExpense
· Payroll
· Salaries
· TeamValues
· Z-DocumentsRepository
So, start clicking and you’ll find your way among the folders soonenough.
You are welcome.
