while reviewing our work:
COMPARING PRIOR OMRs: Fourteen years of OMRs are on shelves throughout the world. Clients should consider the
current issue as the best available.
MARKET DEFINITIONS: We try to define a market based on the opinion of the market’s leader. Since competitors often do
not define markets similarly, there is a certain amount of disagreement with what Spears includes and excludes in each
market segment.
EXCEL WORKBOOK: The published OMR book – the one you are reading – has company revenues based on Q3 2009
research. Spears publishes all numbers in an accompanying EXCEL workbook that is revised and released every 3‐4 months.
Clients should always refer to the latest EXCEL workbook for the best available information.
BACKCASTING: When a company or product line is acquired, Spears transfers all historic revenues to the acquiring company.
For example, if the Baker Hughes acquisition of BJ Services is completed, Spears will transfer all BJS sales to BHI and it will
appear as if BJS has been a product line of BHI forever.
ANNOUNCED ACQUISITIONS: Until an acquisition is consummated, the OMR keeps announced acquired companies
separate. In the same fashion, if a product line has been discontinued, but still exists prior to a sale, the OMR keeps the
product line in the owning company until the action is completed.
CHANGING HISTORIC DATA: When presented with compelling, accurate historic sales data for a company, Spears will adjust
historic OMR numbers. Spears will make about 100 minor adjustments each year and about 10 major adjustments.

OTHERS: Every market segments has a host of independent service providers that are too small for Spears to track
individually. To acknowledge the existence of these “others”, Spears plugs in a value to represent the group. Rarely to we
have additional information on these companies.
