Apple on Pace to Be Most Valuable Company…Maybe EverPublished: Thursday, 21 Jul 2011 | 5:47 PM ET


Apple’s market value will rise to $480 billion over the next 12 months, surpassing Exxon as the most valuable company on earth, according to the updated price targets from analysts following the iPhone-maker’s blockbuster earnings report this week.

The Steve Jobs-led tech giant could even see its market value climb above $600 billion, according to the most bullish forecast on Wall Street from Ticonderoga Securities. That would top Cisco’s record market capitalization of more than $550 billion reached in 2000 at the height of the Internet bubble.

“Apple continues to defy modern principles of economics and delivered the investment community something never seen before (e.g., quarterly revenue of $28.6 billion growing 80 percent year over year),” wrote Gleacher & Co. analyst Brian Marshall, in his updated report where he raised Apple’s 12-month target price to $500 from $450.

“We expect Apple will become the largest market cap company on the planet when the stock hits approximately $445.”

Apple’s stock price  was around $388 on Thursday, up 20 percent from the start of the year after second quarter results Tuesday showed booming demand for the iPhone and iPad. With 926.9 million shares outstanding, Apple’s current price puts its market capitalization at around $360 billion.

Who would have guessed that selling phones and tablet computers would become a more valuable enterprise than refining the fuel on which the global economy runs? Exxon Mobil’s  market value is currently the highest in the world at $410 billion. PetroChina is a distant third behind Apple at $271.6 billion.

“Given the momentum in Apple’s portfolio and inexpensive valuation (10 times current year 2011 EPS, ex-cash), we believe the stock will ultimately reach our 12-month price target of $666,” said Ticonderoga’s Brian White, whose updated price target is up from a previous $612 forecast and is the highest among all analysts who cover the stock.

“The expansion of Apple’s presence in the mobile phone market with the iPhone still remains in the early stages as the mobile Internet ramps around the world with increased smartphone penetration.”

At least 12 analyst firms came out with price target increases after assessing this week’s results, according to the flyonthewall.com. The new report with the lowest price target came from Morgan Stanley, which upped its forecast to just $468 from $428. At that price, Apple would still become the largest company in the world over the next year (assuming Exxon stays flat), sporting a market value of around $444 billion.

Analysts extrapolating from the shocking sales figures released this week are fueling the optimism. The bright outlook is also built around the release of Apple’s cloud product and the iPhone5 this fall, according to analysts. There is also speculation about a China carrier deal and a new TV product that would complete Apple's so-called "halo effect" of mobile, office and home.  

The technology landscape has certainly changed (largely because of Apple) since the time when Cisco’s  market capitalization topped $550 billion and Internet euphoria had some predicting it would become the first $1 trillion company.

It’s been quite a reversal of fortune for the world’s largest maker of routers, as Cisco shares are down 75 percent since March 2000. Besides the bursting of the Internet bubble, Cisco’s performance has been hurt by smart switching technology that would weaken demand for routers.

Acquisitions outside of its core business such as set-top box-maker Scientific Atlanta and Flip Video, have also dampened the outlook for the company, which now sports a market value of under $100 billion. This week, Cisco said it would reduce its workforce by 6,500 employees.

I agree that apple will be the most valuable company,technology innovation is the strongest power,to promote the company’s development.

The technology landscape has certainly changed (largely because of Apple) since the time when Cisco’s  market capitalization topped $550 billion and Internet euphoria had some predicting it would become the first $1 trillion company/
It's worth exploring why Apple succeeds.

it is a hot topic this week . Apple’s mobilephone market share has replaced nokia to became the first . as a report shows form ft . Nokia was overtaken by Apple as the world’s biggest smartphone maker by volume in the second quarter, when shipments declined by 34 per cent from last year to 16.7m, compared with the 20.3m iPhones shipped by its US rival in the same period.      
      In the ten years ago, it is hard to imagine the world's most valuable company is still technical company, rather than fuel company, because of the dotcom bubble ten years ago .  No matter which stock analysis of data have shown that the agency forecast apple will become the most valuable company  over the next 12 monthes, which will replace Exxon .But nokia will shake a fall, i think the jury is still out on it . Like apple, who would have thought of its today's position, and even beyond the Microsoft company . it's still hard to say how many years apple company will stay ahead. smart switching technology will make everything is difficult to foresee . as we know, nokia and microsoft are the tow followers in  smartphones . but maybe their cooperation will gain a success in the future, these tow companies have ever been proved to be great companies, as the updated figures shows the number of software applications available for Windows Phone users had quadrupled to 25,000 since Nokia teamed up with Microsoft in February as more independent developers are drawn to the platform.   
    as somepeople said since nokia,  like Finland is never easy before . in addition, nokia has many advantages over apple . suchas :Hard to cast, hardware powerful, have a series of price of products for different groups of choice, consumer groups, large market approval, evaluation well.so as the old saying goes:  Thirty years hedong, 30 years hexi . everything depends, nokia won't shake a fall, it still has many chances

Innovation and technology are very important, and it may be always correct. We need to learn from Apple.

Apple’s market value is expected to rise to $480 billion and become the highest over the next 12 months. Its current market capitalization is at around $360 billion.
The price target is based on the following reasons:
First, there is a booming demand for the iPhone and iPad and the mobile Internet is ramping around the world. Second, Apple is in the growth phase of iPhone business as the smartphone penetration keeps increasing. Third, the momentum of Apple’s stock price rising is strong while the valuation of it is inexpensive, only 10 times current year 2011 EPS, ex-cash. Fourth, Apple’s sales revenue grows at a pace of 80% year over year, fueling the optimism. Fifth, the release of Apple’s cloud product and the iPhone5 this fall helps to build the bright outlook. Sixth, it is speculated that a China carrier deal and a new TV product would add a “halo-effect”.
Cisco once reached its highest market capitalization of $550 billion, and shares have been down 75% since then, although internet euphoria predicted it would become the first $1 trillion company. Partly because of the burst of internet bubble, partly because of the emergence of smart switching technology, Cisco’s performance has been hurt and its non-principal acquisitions also dampened, resulting in a market value of under $100 billion and 6,500 employees are said to be laid off this week.

I was attracted by the profile of Ipad when I originally saw it. Now I have used Ipad for some time, at least for me, it is really good-looking and practical.  In my view, the worldwide popularity of Ipad and Iphone opens up new vistas of Apple. So it's no wonder that Apple's share will keep on ballooning. Thanks for good article.

it is important to recognize Apple's transformation from a failing firm into a superpower.  Now Apple can enjoy the news of its achievement, though.  Its future may be uncertain, but in the present it's making a  lot of money.

　　对华为来说，和思科的正面对抗才刚刚开始。此前，华为主要营收来自于运营商市场，但在华为未来规划中，企业业务将快速发展，成为公司营收的重要增长极。华为执行副总裁徐文伟称，预计今年华为企业业务年销售额将翻番至40亿美元，并在3到5年内达到150亿美元。而华为2010年企业业务的营收只有20亿美元。徐文伟甚至说，“云计算时代的到来，让通信行业的大企业开始重新赛跑。”[
