Urban Development Economist WRI CHINA OFFICE The Urban Development Economist will be responsible for strategic planning, conducting research, designing and implementing cross sectoral programs for the Sustainable Cities project in China and building then managing a team of 3-4 staff. This position will be based in WRI’s China office in Beijing. Responsibilities: Research and Writing (30%) • Integrative analysis will focus on key economic issues of urban development to include economic growth, economic structure, investment, consumption and trade, population, employment, tax and municipal fiscal budget, financial system operation, regulatory framework of industries, land use, etc. Potential research include: trends and strategies of urbanization, institutional analysis at national and local levels, urban economic development pathways (forecast, scenario studies), etc. • Provides economic information (economy growth, economic structure, population, employment, tax and municipal fiscal budget, land use, etc.) and technical supports on cross-cutting issues to other teams who are working on energy, transport and water. • Responsible for overall planning beyond energy, water and transport. Communications, outreach, and relationship building (30%)

Others (5%) • Other tasks directed by Sustainable Cities Director / Deputy Country Director, and China Country Director Qualifications: • Advanced economics degree and subject matter expertise in urban development, development economics, environmental economics, or regional economics or other related fields. Master’s degree required. PhD preferred. o At least 10 years of relevant experience in urban development, environmental economics, or related fields. This shall include at least 5 years of project experience in China, and sufficient international experience. Ideal successful candidate will have 12-13 or more years of work experience in related economics fields and be recognized as subject matter expert. o Experience in developing and implementing applied research, and delivering results and outcomes o Solid background in institutional analysis and governance development o Excellent research and quantitative skills, including data analysis, and modeling o Experience in publishing papers and familiar with peer review process o Excellent management skills, including project management o Excellent organizational, research and time-management skills, with a proven ability to work promptly, accurately, independently and efficiently under pressure, and to meet tight deadlines. o Positive, enthusiastic and innovative in facing challenges, opportunities and new tasks. o Demonstrated team spirit with excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a multi-cultural environment with staff, ability to work in cross-sectoral work, and with external stakeholders at all levels.
