He was the greatest lyric poet Ireland has produced and one of the major figures of 20th-century literature, the acknowledged leader of the Irish literary renaissance. Yeats’ early poetry was under the influence of the romantic poets, but his Irish theme and his special use of language soon showed him to be a poet of distinction.
