Time Period: Before 1990, 1990 - 1995 Country: China Data Category: Micro Data Data Type: Panel Data Frequency: Unit of Observation: Firm Number of Observations: 1980 - 1989: 769 firms; 1990 - 1994: 681 firms Abstract: The micro panel surveys of Chinese State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) cover the period of 1980 to 1994. (The first survey covers 1980 to 1989 and the second survey covers 1990 to 1994.) The data covers four provinces, including Jilin, Jiangsu, Shanxi, and Sichuan, representing four geographical of regions of economic development in China. (Northeast, East, North, and West). The coverage of industries, 39 in total, is representative of China's overall industrial structure although large and medium enterprises are over-represented. The industries were grouped into five major industrial categories: mining and utility, heavy manufacturing, chemical, light manufacturing, and others. Unlike surveys of the state enterprises conducted by government agencies, the two surveys were carefully designed and pilot tested by economics researchers. There are two parts to the data set. The first part contains qualitative information from the senior managements of the enterprises. It mostly consists of attitudinal and qualitative questions with multiple choices. The second part of the data set is based purely on accounting information concerning the enterprises (financial data). In addition to standard (government required) accounting data, such as output, input, investment, employment, and capital, certain detailed information concerning the government-enterprise relation is also available. Variables: Firm identity, management system and organization information, relationship between enterprise and its supervisors, property rights and asset structure, internal incentive stem of enterprises, management characteristics, firm抯 financial data, output, input, employment and wages, financial standing, assets, liability and ownership interest, investment, and operating rate.
