湖北省公安县人，1956年生。1974--1977下乡插队务农；1977-1982在华中理工大学数学系就读、任教;1982年获数学硕士学位。1983-1987年在美国明尼苏达大学经济系攻读博士学位，并获明尼苏达大学经济学博士学位，博士论文获全美斯隆博士论文奖;1987-1990为美国德洲A&M大学经济系助教授(Assistant Professor);1991年破格提前提升为副教授并获得终生任期教授资格(tenure)，并为德国康思藤斯(Konstanz)大学客座教授;1995年被提前提升为终身任期正教授，1998年被美国德州A&M大学授予杰出人才奖。现为德州A&M大学经济系教授、民营企业研究中心高级研究员、上海财经大学经济学院院长、长江学者讲座教授、中国国务院发展研究中心国际技术与经济研究所顾问，同时也是香港科技大学、华中科技大学、西北大学等大学的兼职教授，曾任清华大学特聘教授。在对1990-2000年全球著名1000名经济学家的出版物与被引用次数进行中分别第282位与第504位，在华人经济学家中排名分别为第4位与第6位。列入2003年由英国Edward Elgar出版社出版、英国著名经济学术史专家Mark Blaug 和 Howard Vane根据社会科学文献引证索引所收录的全世界最有影响的700多名经济学家《经济家名人录》(《Who is Who in Economics》) 。 ( http://www.tecn.cn )

刘大中

有一个人的名字现在不大听到了，他没得过诺贝尔奖，可他很多同事、朋友、学生都得过奖，他也是《新帕尔格雷夫大词典》条目中的唯一一个中国人。他叫刘大中。

　　刘大中是江苏武进人。常熟自古就是文人荟萃的地方，刘大中又出身于书香门第，学习成绩异常优秀。1936年，他从交通大学土木工程专业毕业， 留学美国康奈尔大学转攻经济学。1940年，他在康奈尔获得经济学博士学位，年仅26岁。

　　我们只需举出一项指标就足以证明刘大中的不凡。迄今已有百多年历史的《美国经济评论》是美国经济学会主编的学报，世界排名第一的经济学期刊，一般学者若是能在上面发表一篇论文，那么各个名牌大学的聘书就会纷至沓来。截至今日，在上面发表论文的中国人依然屈指可数，可1941年，年仅27岁的刘大中就在这本学报上发表了一篇论文———“论中国的外汇问题”。他是第一个在这本学报上发表论文的中国人。

　　1936年，刘大中出国时，中国刚刚放弃了银本位，采取复本位制并与美元挂钩。可是没过多久，中国经济就因为抗日战争陷入了大混乱，货币政策几乎无人过问。可是人民总要生活，总要交易，即使在无政府的地方，市场也会自发地生成。上海是当时金融中心，又是沦陷区，政府能力所不及，外汇黑市就在上海蓬勃发展起来。

　　刘大中虽然身在海外，但最拿手的研究就是统计分析现实经济状况，再加上他对中国国民性深刻地了解，所以准确地把黑市上的供需关系分解成十二种类型，分析它们对中美实际汇率的影响。战时的经济是特殊的经济，几乎完全不能用教科书上主流的均衡分析方法来讨论。刘大中的手法让人耳目一新。而且，刘大中还试图为解决中国现实的经济混乱出谋划策，或者为战时经济提供一个大致稳定可靠的替代方案。他提出，现实目标就决不能仅仅是稳定货币，而必须做出更大的全盘考虑。刘大中这篇文章在世界经济学界引起很大反响。从一开始，刘大中的学术命运就已注定，是要在一片混乱乃至废墟上绘制新的经济蓝图。

　　抗战结束，刘大中迫不及待地回国，执教鞭于清华大学。中国社会百废待兴，经济百孔千疮，经济学更是一塌糊涂。刘大中一面在学校里教经济学和统计学，一面就组织人手调查了解中国实际经济情况。国民政府对此两眼一抹黑，内忧外患之下，对于各地的经济矛盾只能头痛医头、脚痛医脚。刘大中获得很多确信的数据后，和他的好友蒋硕杰一同小心地提出一些政策建议，被他的康奈尔老学长胡适看到，大为叹赏。可在当时的局势下，刘大中和蒋硕杰空有一腔热血和满脑子经济计划，却无从实施。

　　1948年，国民经济已经陷入崩溃边缘，上海的通货膨胀不可收拾。胡适找准机会把年轻的刘大中和蒋硕杰力荐给国民政府，可是行政院长翁文灏却以为局势已经不可挽回，再有什么经济政策也于事无补。刘大中无奈之下，又回到了康奈尔，继续他的学术研究。

　　刘大中在美国专治计量经济学，在理论上颇有创新，构建了多种计量经济模型。他指导的学生恩格尔日后更是在这个领域有极大突破，获得了诺贝尔奖。可刘大中的内心还是牵挂中国，牵挂现实的经济建设。

　　解放后，中国大陆处于封锁状态，统计信息又非常匮乏，这恰好给刘大中展现身手的机会。1965年，他和叶孔嘉博士在多年研究的基础上合著了《中国大陆的经济：1933－1959》，在普林斯顿出版社出版，顿时在西方学界引起轰动。这本书成为了研究中国现代经济史的经典。弗里德曼等大经济学家在讨论中国问题时，也总以这本书作为主要依据。30年代社会经济状况是刘大中亲身感受过的；40年代的情况则是刘大中积极投入、试图改变却不得；到了50年代，刘大中只能在大洋彼岸默默注视，根据零星半点的线索来苦苦推算。这本书研究的历史跨度有多长，刘大中积累的心血就有多深。直到今天，对于中国那几十年的经济发展状况还没有统一的说法，很多重要数据还没有披露，但刘大中这本书的地位仍然无人可以撼动。

　　50年代，台湾大学聘刘大中为教授，“中央研究院”聘他为院士，多次请他回来帮助台湾制订经济政策。于是，他在台湾培养了很多学生，指导编制台湾的统计年鉴，亲自参与设计了台湾的税制改革。刘大中要挽回大陆经济的梦想没有实现，转而在台湾这样的弹丸之地小试牛刀，取得极大成效。我们现在回顾台湾经济起飞的历程，怎样表彰刘大中的贡献都不为过分。

就没有一个中国的种，说什么中国的经济学家？全是外国的货，舶来品而已。用以自欺欺人！

文必曰罗马、言必曰希腊，哪有什么中华？还说什么华人经济学家？骰子里面全是美国货。
