I think those that are in favor of R may be correct in saying R offers more flexibility in statistical analysis. However, much of the time --i'd even say the majority of the time we spend on data analysis is not statistical analysis but data management--ie, get the data ready for statistical analysis. In this regard, STATA is the most powerful among the popular packages, including SAS, not to say R.
While R may be more flexible in terms of statistical analysis than STATA, how can you use R to do complicated data management???
