Advice About Landing Your FirstPosition
NOTE: A majority of the survey responses to this question included the following:
1) take as many exams as possible
2) get real-world experience from an internship
3) work on your interview skills and network with actuaries
4) be willing to relocate
In addition to those universal recommendations, here are some other suggestions.
Be well rounded in activities and/orclubs. But don’t just be active — take part in leadership roles, such as organizing events and holding offices.
Don’t ever give up on your dreams.
It was hard for me because I didn’t know I wanted to do this until senior year. My advice is to figure out what you want to do before graduation sooner. I have found cold emails to actuaries kindof helpful. It hasn’t landed me a job, but I do know my next few steps.
You need to demonstrate that in choosing you to become an employee, you will make your workplace a better place. You need to “fit in” rather than just be the most qualified. Make sure to connect with your interviewers during the interview.
Look early and often. Be yourself. Don’t worry about stepping out of your comfort zone. Set goals and achieve them.
You need something on your resume that makes you stand out from the crowd. Once you get an interview you should practice fake interviews with your friends. It seems like consulting companies want award winning personalities to impress clients with. Smile. Shine.
Learn about the positions you are applying for and how your experiences may be relevant to the position. Be comfortable in your own shoes and with who you are; don’t worry so much about “practicing” a persona for interviews.
Solid experience in Excel is a must. Programming skills (VBA), along with SQL, Access, and possibly SAS are assets.
Don’t take an admin position at an insurance company and think you can switch later, you’ll probably have to leave the company to make the jump to actuarial.
Prepare thoroughly for interviews. Have an idea how you will answer specific questions which are likely to come up. Don’t put anything on your resume that you’re not willing and able to discuss.
Don’t be afraid to message alumni who are in the same profession, whether it’s just for advice or to ask them if they have an open position at their company.
Everyone is experiencing what you are, so don’t get down —it will only hurt you.
If you are not authorized to work in the country try to get permanent work authorization.
