Advice About Landing Your FirstPosition

NOTE: A majority of the survey responses to this question included the following:

1) take as many exams as possible

2) get real-world experience from an internship

3) work on your interview skills and network with actuaries

4) be willing to relocate

In addition to those universal recommendations, here are some other suggestions.

Be well rounded in activities and/orclubs. But don’t just be active — take part in leadership roles, such as organizing events and holding offices.

Don’t ever give up on your dreams.

It was hard for me because I didn’t know I wanted to do this until senior year. My advice is to figure out what you want to do before graduation sooner. I have found cold emails to actuaries kindof helpful. It hasn’t landed me a job, but I do know my next few steps.

You need to demonstrate that in choosing you to become an employee, you will make your workplace a better place. You need to “fit in” rather than just be the most qualified. Make sure to connect with your interviewers during the interview.

Look early and often. Be yourself. Don’t worry about stepping out of your comfort zone. Set goals and achieve them.

You need something on your resume that makes you stand out from the crowd. Once you get an interview you should practice fake interviews with your friends. It seems like consulting companies want award winning personalities to impress clients with. Smile. Shine.

Learn about the positions you are applying for and how your experiences may be relevant to the position. Be comfortable in your own shoes and with who you are; don’t worry so much about “practicing” a persona for interviews.

Solid experience in Excel is a must. Programming skills (VBA), along with SQL, Access, and possibly SAS are assets.

Don’t take an admin position at an insurance company and think you can switch later, you’ll probably have to leave the company to make the jump to actuarial.

Prepare thoroughly for interviews. Have an idea how you will answer specific questions which are likely to come up. Don’t put anything on your resume that you’re not willing and able to discuss.

Don’t be afraid to message alumni who are in the same profession, whether it’s just for advice or to ask them if they have an open position at their company.

Everyone is experiencing what you are, so don’t get down —it will only hurt you.

If you are not authorized to work in the country try to get permanent work authorization.

Study more than you think you need to for the actuary tests.

Looking is not as easy as one would think. You have to be dedicated and work hard at finding and applying to potential jobs.

Consider going to foreign schools like University of Waterloo or Scotland - they are better for ActSci.

Try to double major: act sci and are lated field like cs or econ.

Look for a company that actually cares about you and that you love working for.

Have a perfect gpa and know how to program.

Prepare for this profession in your freshman year of college, not in your senior year.

In a tough economy and changing environment for actuarial jobs, it is essential to develop so skills through a diverse array of experiences: internships, volunteering, networking, and leadership opportunities. Also develop technical skills through exam progress.

Taking advantage of every opportunity your advisors give in the way of career fairs and on campus practice interviews and resume critiques with HR personnel from local businesses is not only a great way to hone interview and resume writing skills, but also presents great networking opportunities.

Perservere.

Try to understand the business instead of over-kill the exams.

Pass exams, study the company, and keep in touch with the current news.

Quantitative skills are great, but people skills are better.

(精算毕竟是比较技术性的工种,实际工作中这个其实应该反过来,people skills are great, but quantitative skills are better

Have someone proofread your resume.Write out possible interview questions and your answers to them ahead of time to practice. Apply anywhere you can and don’t give up! It is helpful if someone can pass along your resume into the company.

Getting any kind of analytic job, especially at an insurance company, may allow you to shift into the actuarial field as you pass more exams.

Pay for exam prep material out of pocket. I think it’s worth it in the end for a better chance to pass. Use various actuarial recruiters. Very helpful!

Learn Microsoft Office as best you can. Also, if you can’t find an actuarial job out of school right away, temporarily settle for a job in a related field or that requires you to use Excel, Access, SQL, SAS, Visual basic or Sharepoint.

At some point in school you will have the opportunity to do a project which you can relate to actuarial science. Something like this can go on your resume and will set you apart from other entry level candidates.

Small talk/interview skills and some programming experience are extremely beneficial.

Apply to a LOT of places. You never know what a particular company is looking for. If they show any interest in return, put your heart into the follow-up materials and be aware: the process is designed to weed out the less-than-honest.

Should open your eyes to other opportunities, not only actuarial. Risk management, Financial analyst, investment accounting, statistics would be good choices too, because job demands are far more than supplies in currently market.

Network with nearby actuarial associations and social media groups like LinkedIn.

Try as many outlets as possible and don’t get discouraged. Just because you can’t find a posting for an entry level position at a particular company does not mean you shouldn’t contact them. If there is an opportunity to speak to someone (via email, phone, or in person) ata company, take it!

Looking students should not wait forthe CT results to be declared, they should try to search the market. There might be some opportunities which is available for the students not having cleared CT papers also.

Apply online and at job fairs.

You should find ways to talk to actuaries. This could be going to a regional actuarial conference. Talk to college professors to see if they know anyone who is working in the field that they can put you in contact with.

Internships, cooperative work experiences are pluses to your resume. Being well rounded with different skills, interests, foreign languages are also important. When interviewing, beopen and sociable. Companies want bright, smart leaders who are willing to workand not be afraid to communicate ideas.

it’s okay to apply for more positions with a company if you’ve already applied there. The more they see your name, the better off you will be.

Be very professional with your resume.

Use the actuarial directory to find companies in areas you would enjoy working in.

Looking for a job should be a full time job. If you don’t put much effort into the search, then don’t expect toget a great job.

While exams are important in actuarial career, I advise students to strike a balance. Employers are looking for students who posts other skill sets, such as communication, interpersonal skill, team work, presentation, etc. These are essential skills: an actuarial job is not only crunching numbers, but also able to explain results to others.

Try to intern in more than one field. I interned in P&C and retirement, and was able to narrow down my nterests.

(我大学时6个实习把pension/life & health/P&C;insurance/consulting/reinsurance/government的精算工作都试遍了,其中还有一个学期在精算猎头公司实习哈哈)

Learn about the companies before handand come to the interviews as prepared as possible.

Try to talk to someone in the company, get to know what they do on their daily basis.

Pass exams and use a recruiter.

Deeply understand the actuarial knowledge you’ve learned in class. Be confident what you’ve known about actuarial skills Always be passionate with your career.

Be creative in hunting. Everybody is looking online for jobs, so you have to find those jobs that not everybody is applying to. I searched the SOA database to determine what companies were employing actuaries, then would find the company online to determine if they had any openings.

There are jobs out there. Be persistent, but most importantly be yourself. When I came out for the interview, I thought never would I move to Denver, so I was very relaxed in the interview, mostly because it wasn’t my “dream job”. I left the interview thinking, “wow, you rocked it”, and it was because I was myself.

Learn how to work long hours. Until you are in a really ideal situation you will need to outwork everyone. I mean everyone.

Figure out how an entry level hire can contribute to company, think about times I demonstrated those qualities, and use those stories in an interview.

Go to the actuarialdirectory.org and look up actuaries in your area in order to network with them. Meet them for coffee or lunch and pick their brains for an hour. Show a genuine interest in the profession and be prepared with questions. Although their firms may not be currently hiring, they may know of others that are.
在actuarialdirectory.org找到你附近的精算,试着和他们联系。
