The problem has been solved now. I have downloaded hlm 7.0 (the student edition), and it can read the .sav data created by SPSS 21.0. Maybe there are some problems with the interface between SPSS and hlm 6.

Its a good news that your problem is resolved,
Just be careful that all your observations are included in the HLM model because the student version of HLM may be limited in term of the observation number. I this is the problem just convert your data file in a former version of spss, stata or xls and retry the exort (i can send to your statastransfer for this task).
I you have a problem of estimation interpetation just send me a message and i will send you a good book for this.

搞得那么复杂，stata对层级数据的分析是很厉害的，没有hlm这么复杂，可以参照stata中的mixed

您好。我遇到了相同的问题。看到你解决了，而且提供了解决方案。我用的是spss21，下载了学生版本的HLM7.0，但是仍然是有那个提示。苦恼了。

我也遇到了这个问题啊，spss版本是17，hlm6.08和hlm7都试过了，还是不行呀！TAT
