This paperisacomprehensivestudyontheprogressinresearchonChineseurbanization.Onthe
basis oftheconceptandconnotationofChineseurbanizationdefinedbyChinesescholars,the
paper systematicallycollectstheresearchresultsontheissuesconcerningurbanizationinChina
from thedifferentapproachesofdemography,geography,cityplanning,economicsandhistory,
reviewing theprocessofresearchonChineseurbanizationmadebothdomesticallyand
internationally.Inthispaper,thedomesticstudiesfallintofiveperiodsasfollows:theinitial
period ofresearchonurbanizationinChina(1978–1983);theperiodwithbothdomestically
constructed andborrowedtheoriesonurbanization(1984–1988);theperiodofresearchon
leading urbanizationfactorsandlocalization(1989–1997);theperiodwiththeresearchgreatly
promoted bythegovernment(1998–2004);andtheperiodfeaturingflourishingstudiesonthe
scienceofurbanizationinChina(2005tilltoday).Incontrast,theoverseasresearchon
Chineseurbanizationcanbedividedintothreeperiods:theperiodstudyingthehistoryof
urbanizationinChina(beforethe1970s);thesystematicresearchonChineseurbanization
(1970–1999);andthecomprehensiveresearchonChineseurbanization(2000tilltoday).The
paperfocusesonthekeyresultsofresearchonChineseurbanization,includingnineissuesas
follows:theguidelinesandroadforurbandevelopmentinChina,thefeaturesofChinese
urbanization,themechanismdrivingthegrowthofChineseurbanization,theprocessof
Chineseurbanization,thespatialpatternsofChineseurbanization,theurbanizationinrural
areasinChina,thecomparisonofurbanizationinChinaandothercountries,andglobalization
andregionalurbanization.
