As all of us know, modern regression analysis differed essentially from the original version. But this represents a great advancement rather than a degraded branch. In essence, this issue is a question concerning data mining.Modern regression analysis focuses on the technique of mining something from flawed data to make it meaningful and therefore often-used techniques have occurred. Without these techniques, we could not likely to get what we want. Thus, fundamentally it becomes a question: the underlying logic of data mining is correct? Among econometrists, there has not been concensus. The development of modern regression analysis is actually in line of the data mining thinking. Is it right,or fundamentlly "scientific"? To answer this question, we should know something about science philosophical views. Modern science philosophers believe that science is merely a kind of program or paradigm as Kun terms, which has been widely accepted by most professional persons. Thus, we perhaps never be sure wether a certian research methodology is "correct", but only be sure it is "scientific" because our profession has accepted it as correct. With this in mind, do you have an idea about this debate? Do you have the right attitudes toward the development direction of moder n regression analysis? I hope you will.
