LED leads energy savings, carbon cuts
Global economy rapidly shifting to low carbon economy based on green
energy Energy and the environment have emerged as hot issues worldwide
amid rising oil prices, worsening global warming, greenhouse gas reduction
mandates, and the rise of the carbon emissions market. The Kyoto Protocol’s
first obligation period started in 2008, and a post-Kyoto Protocol agreement
will likely be signed in 2009, heralding a profound impact on the industry
paradigm. This means the global economy, which has so far been driven by
fossil fuel, will rapidly shift to a much greener, and low carbon one.
Domestic LED makers to grow into global players on aggressive R&D
investment Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have become an alternative to
conventional light sources with mercury-free, energy efficient, and less
carbon dioxide emitting technology. The global LED industry is led by Japan
holding patents on source technology with Korea and Taiwan following
closely behind. Domestic LED makers are relatively inferior to Japanese
counterparts due to lack of accumulated source technology in LED chips and
fluorescent materials. But they are poised to emerge stronger, thanks to
government support and technology progress in LED-related fields, coupled
with their aggressive investment in R&D.
LED theme coming into focus again LED, one of the hottest stock market
themes, will likely come under the spotlight in 2Q08. LED BLU will be
applied to notebook computers on a full scale to meet trends toward low
power and slim laptops. In addition, LED technology will also likely be
certified as high efficiency lighting standards. The LED sector‘s earnings will
see a major surge in 2H08. We advise investors to keep watch on Seoul
Semiconductor, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, LG Innotek, Fawoo Technology,
Lumens and Alti-electronics as sector-leading stocks.
