Abstract

The reasons investors use exchange-traded funds (ETFs), rather than other alternative instruments, as part of their active equity strategies are increasing. In North America and Europe, ETFs are becoming popular in managed portfolios and for portfolio cash management. Institutional inertia is being replaced by an appreciation of the low-cost opportunities of using ETFs.

Noel C. Archard, CFA, is a managing director and head of BlackRock Canada, where he leads the Canadian business, overseeing initiatives in both the institutional and retail divisions. He is also on the global operating committee and the Americas executive committee at BlackRock. Previously, Mr. Archard worked at iShares and at Barclays Global Investors, which later merged with BlackRock. He also worked at the Vanguard Group, where he held positions in the brokerage service unit and in the exchange-traded funds group. Mr. Archard is a member of CFA Society Toronto. He holds a BS degree from Northwestern University.
