Energy is an essential element for human survival and development. Overthe history of mankind, each and every significant step in the progressof civilisation has been accompanied by energy innovations andsubstitutions. The exploitation and utilisation of fossil energy hasboosted enormously world economic development and society as
a whole. However, large-scale exploitation and utilisation of fossilenergy is also one of the major causes of ecological destruction andenvironmental pollution.
As is well known, coal is China’s dominant source of energy. Itaccounts for about 70 percent of primary energy production andconsumption. Furthermore, coal will remain the main energy source inChina for a long period of time in the future. The proportion of coalin China’s energy mix is far higher than the world average, and coalexploitation
and utilisation has become one of the major causes of environmentalpollution. Therefore, clean coal technology is a strategic choice forenergy development in China.
