要办好不容易!策展人带玩心 挑战威尼斯双年展

The main exhibition at the Venice Biennale isarguably the most coveted gig in curating. It’s the centerpiece of theinternational art world’s highest-profile event, and gives the chosen curatorinstant prestige. But it’s a tricky one to get right.
威尼斯双年展主题展可以说是最令策展界向往的盛事,是这场国际艺术界最受瞩目活动的重中之重,能让中选的策展人立即享有盛名,不过,要把它办好可不容易。
The show, held every two years, sprawls across twosites — one a columned pavilion in a public park, the Giardini, the other a setof former shipbuilding workshops in the Arsenale — and pulls together work by ahuge number of artists. In 2017, there were 120 of them; in 2015, there were136.
主题展每两年办一次,展区广及两处,一个是「绿园城堡」公园中立有圆柱的展馆,另一个是「军火库」一系列造船厂遗址,并集中展示数量庞大的艺术家作品,2017年有120名艺术家参展,2015年更有136名。
This year, the number will be down: There will bejust 79 artists or artist partnerships, but each will show at both venues,offering radically different works at the two sites. These are some of thechanges introduced by the curator Ralph Rugoff in an exhibition titled “May YouLive in Interesting Times,” opening May 11 and running through Nov. 24.
今年参展人数会减少,只会有79个艺术家或艺术家合作团队,不过这两种人的作品在两个展区都会展出,两地展品的风格差异很大。这就是主题展策展人鲁戈夫带来的一些改变。主题展名为「愿你活在有趣的时代」,5月11日开幕,展至11月24日。
For the past 13 years, Rugoff, a 62-year-old NewYorker, has steered the Hayward Gallery, a public institution not far from TateModern in London. With a series of thoughtful, but also playful, shows, he hasput the Hayward on London’s contemporary-art map.

In Venice, his show will compete for attention with90 others held in national pavilions, as well as with numerous “collateralevents,” and face a pitiless lineup of critics. Yet in an interview at hisHayward office in London — a windowless basement room with flat-pack furnitureand a single framed poster resting on a ledge — Rugoff appearedcharacteristically coolheaded.

The Venice Biennale “has the potential to be theworld’s greatest art exhibition. Each iteration is a different story,” Rugoffsaid. “Sometimes it rises to the occasion, sometimes not.”
鲁戈夫说,威尼斯双年展「有成为全球最伟大艺术展的潜力,每次登场都是不同的故事,有时能应付当时的挑战,有时不能」。
“Biggerisn’t always better,” he said. “The exhibition format doesn’t always lenditself to gargantuan scale, in general. Do you want to see movies that are 20hours long? Compared to a normal exhibition, that’s what a Biennale is like.”
鲁戈夫说,「大不见得就是好,一般来说,展览呈现的方式不尽然适合浩大的规模。你会想看长达20小时的电影吗?这就是双年展跟平常展览的差别」。
Rugoff said he had also avoided giving theexhibition a theme because there were 300 biennials around the world each yearwith similar themes; all he wanted was for the artists to represent the timeswe live in. At a time when governments were distorting facts and the internetgave people only the news they wanted to hear, contemporary art was about“simultaneously juggling different perspectives,” he said: It “opens up yourbrain.”
鲁戈夫说,他还得避免给双年展定下一个主题,因为每年世界各地会举办300场双年展,主题都差不多,他只想让艺术家呈现我们生活的时代。此际政府扭曲事实,而网络只提供人们他们想要听到的消息,他说,当代艺术就是「同时掌握并表现不同视角」,能「开拓你的眼界」。
The chosen works will be both “experimental” and“classical,” because “art should give us pleasure as well as provide criticalinsight,” Rugoff said.
