2010 is shaping up to be the biggest year for device clinical trials in quite a while.
Over the course of the year we’ll see results from more than a dozen trials likely to
impact sector growth rates and the competitiveness of various players in key markets.
With this in mind, we’ve created a Top 10 List of trials to watch in 2010, the
overarching story being, for a sector that was lacking in clinical catalysts and big new
product flow, there’s more happening right now, in 2010, than at any point in the last
5-6 years.
• What’s on the list . . . The list just includes trials we expect to see data from in
2010. Some of the bigger trials investors will know about, while others will be new
to people. At the top of our list is not surprisingly Edwards’ PARTNER trial,
followed by privately held CVRx’s Rheos trial, Abbott’s EVEREST II trial, the
NIH-sponsored CREST study, and Medtronic’s STAR III trial (see full list below).
• What’s not on the list . . . We’ve limited the list and the report that follows to
device trials. In other words, the big drug trials of 2010 that we see impacting J&J
(such as the Telaprevir ADVANCE and REALIZE trials, and the Xarelto ROCKET
AF trial) and to a lesser degree Abbott (the ACCORD trial) do not make our list,
though they will matter for the stocks. Also not on the list are what we would call
the “non-clinical” trials . . . in other words, the legal ones. The big legal trials to
watch in 2010 are (1) KCI vs SNN, which
