Preface
I wanted to title this book “Leisure of the Theory Class”. The publishers demurred. My second choice was ‘Feasibility, Optimality and Fixed Points”. While accurate, it did not identify, as the publisher noted, the intended audience. We settled at last on the anodyne title that now graces this book>
The kinds of mathematical questions are discussed. Given a function f and a set S.
1. Find an x such that f(x) is in S. this is the feasibility question.
2. Find an x in S that optimizes f(x). this is the problem of optimality.
3. Find an x in S such that f(x)=x; this is the fixed point problem.
These questions arise frequently in Economic Theory, and the applications described in the book illustrate this.
