Assets and instruments are different concepts. Assets haver intrinsic value e.g. property, physical gold, companies (contains both ingangible and tangible assets)... Instruments give you exposure to value of the assets. Gold ETF and futures give you exposure to price of gold. Shares, corporate bonds, and stock options give you exposure to the underlying companies.
