PwC has now conducted a European study analysing trends in working capital management but also its link with profitability. This study highlights how companies can benefit from better working capital management, both in terms of access to liquidity and cash and also profitability.
For this pupose, PwC has analysed the publicly available annual reports of 969 companies. They were chosen from the leading 200 quoted companies by market capitalisation in 11 European countries. The chosen companies cover 10 main industries and we analysed a five-year timeframe from 2004 until 2008.
The main results of the study show that no major efforts were devoted to working capital throughout the 2004-2008 period. In other words, since the last major recession. We believe this is something that needs to change. Our study further shows that focusing on working capital can also generate important benefits in terms of profitability. Again, a factor much needed in today's economy.
