John Hall have just uploaded a new Catalogue of SPSS tutorials (pdf, landscape format) for survey analysis to hid site:

To date there are 76 published tutorials, each with a tested hyperlink title, comprising a total of 625 (mainly pdf) pages.  Other tutorials are in preparation.  Tutorials are designed as a complete Teach-yourself course in the capture, management and analysis of data from questionnaire surveys.  They are aimed at beginners and assume no previous knowledge or experience of surveys, statistics or SPSS and proceed at a gentle, step-by-step pace, with full colour screenshots at each step.  The emphasis is on substantive social research questions, process and logic rather than sampling theory and inferential statistics.  Most analysis uses charts or percentages in tabulations, although there is one equation (for chi-square) when the formula is built up in stages from data in a two way table.

All examples except two are taken from real surveys of the general population.  Of the two exceptions, one is a pen and paper exercise students can undertake at the beginning of the course, the other is from a (self-completion questionnaire) survey of fifth formers (aged 15-16) at a mixed comprehensive school (11-18) in North London.  All surveys used have associated SPSS files (though in the early stages students are expected to create their own) and full documentation (questionnaires, raw data, user manuals).

As well as the tutorials, other pages on the site have links to textbooks and useful on-line resources for both SPSS and statistics for social research.

The website is terrific and we have used it in the past, referring the site to a number of people. There seems to be a lack of any annotated output for advanced stats using the Complex Samples add-on, such as, logistic regression for categorical data and the like. SPSS and SPSS Complex Samples don’t have the same steps in regression and how to adequately interpret models is a puzzle. Such work would be beneficial for people who work with large complex survey datasets.
