Suppose firm has 2 products and cost structure C(y1,y2) = F + m1y1 + m2y2
Fis common cost (e.g., R&D); m1 andm2 are marginal production costs.

ICC & FCC have various ad hoc “fully distributed costs” (FDC)
All try to be fair (and fail in particular respects)
FDC algorithm assigns fiF to service i, where f1 + f2 = 1

Revenue from service i consumers who consume yi, piyi = fiF +miyi

Examples of FDC: (i) f1/f2 = p1y1/p2y2 ;(ii) f1/f2 = y1/y2
(iii)  f1/f2 = m1y1/m2y2 , “directly attributable costs” (nottrivial to compute prices)

Question:

Consider linear demand, i.e., pi = ai – biyi   (i=1,2)

Say firm’s cost structure, C(y1,y2) = F+ m1y1 + m2y2
Obtain equations that determine the solutions (p1, p2) for the “directly attributable costs”FDC（fully distributed costs）

Firm's total profit is V = (a1-b1y1)y1+(a2-b2y2)y2-F-m1y1-m2y2. The first-order conditions are
a1-2b1y1-m1=0
a2-2b2y2-m2=0
Once you find the optimal y1 and y2, the optimal solution to p1 and p2 is easy to obtain.

Suppose you distribute k percent common cost to product 1 and 1-k to product 2. Then the average costs of two products, respectively, are
AC1=kF/y1+m1
AC2=(1-k)F/y2+m2.

Now set the prices equal to marginal costs, you can find y1 and y2 (using the quadratic formula). From y1 and y2, you can find p1 and p2. Note that the prices should be higher than the marginal costs.

You list 3 cases of FDC. It seems that you have to consider all 3 cases, not the one I gave above.

是的 这个题最后就是利用已知条件方程 f1+f2=1 f1/f2=m1y1/m2y2  pi=ai-biyi piyi=fiF+miyi 来求出pi的等式 计算看上去很复杂

The question ONLY asks you to "Obtain equations that determine the solutions (p1, p2) ".
