The Greek prime minister’s announcement of a plebiscite on debt rescue terms has stunned negotiators
Five years of wrenching austerity that have left many Greeks traumatised and pauperised are about to get a lot worse.

Creditor governments meeting in Brussels on Saturday night pledged to halt Greece’s bailout on Tuesday after the leftwing government abandoned five months of negotiations with its European lenders and called a referendum that may propel the country out of the euro.

Thieves are taking prized items such as roof tiles, topping stones on dry stone walls and York stone paving slabs
Some of Yorkshire’s most beautiful rural areas are reporting a plague of stone thefts, with homes, schools, farms, churches and chapels all being targeted by thieves. The situation has become so dire that police have launched a PR drive to raise awareness of the threat to their region’s heritage.

Jason McCartney, Tory MP for Colne Valley, has warned that his constituency’s heritage is being “systematically dismantled”. During a debate on the problem in parliament, he said he was receiving weekly reports of stone thefts from West Yorkshire police. Many robberies take place in daylight with thieves posing as workmen in high-visibility jackets.

Vic Marks assesses the England and Australia squads’ credentials for the Ashes series
■ Both sides’ openers have different attributes yet one thing in common: they are all left-handed. We know the identity of England’s pair. Alastair Cook and Adam Lyth are three years apart in age but the disparity in the number of Test caps is massive (112). There were encouraging signs against New Zealand that Cook was reacquainted with the whereabouts of his off-stump. Lyth struck his maiden century at Headingley with great poise but, despite facing Trent Boult, the Ashes is another step up in temperament and technique.

Three-time Wimbledon champion McEnroe wants players to make their own line calls, drop the let rule and have tie-breaks in fifth set at Wimbledon
John McEnroe, unsurprisingly perhaps, agrees with Boris Becker that modern tennis needs some candour, some edginess, on court and off, to breath life back into a game that has been too nice for too long.

In separate interviews with our sister paper the Guardian in the past few days, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray have agreed there is an unspoken pact of mutual respect, without going all the way with Becker, who says Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, “really don’t like each other”.

• McLaren ninth out of 10 in F1 constructors’ championship
• ‘We’re giving everything. We’re not just waiting for it to get good’
Jenson Button has revealed the full depth of McLaren’s frustrations by stating: “We won’t be on the podium this year.” Button has been an unflagging cheerleader as his team have turned in some dire performances this season but as he prepares for next Sunday’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone the former world champion admitted that neither he nor his team-mate Fernando Alonso – still regarded by many as the best all-round driver in the world – had any chance of a top-three finish.

With the country edging closer and closer towards default, our panel examines the current stalemate, the factors behind the crisis and what Greece can do next

The shock decision of Alexis Tsipras to call a snap referendum for 5 July, just like the socialist prime minister George Papandreou had tried to do in 2011, has torpedoed any chance of reaching an agreement this weekend. Greece will almost certainly default, or at least will get into arrears if it refuses to – or simply can’t – pay the 1.6bn euros it is due to the International Monetary Fund on 30 June.

• Denmark 1-4 Sweden
• Bech 63; Guidetti 23pen, Tibbling 26, Quailson 83, Hiljemark 90
Sweden will face Portugal in the European Under-21 Championship final after Hakan Ericson’s side produced perhaps their best performance of the tournament to sweep aside much-fancied Denmark in this Scandinavian derby in Prague.

The former Manchester City striker John Guidetti scored one and created another to help take Sweden into their first final in this competition since 1992. There they will take on Portugal, who thrashed Germany in the day’s other semi-final, and they will do so with a certain amount of confidence. Sweden held Rui Jorge’s side to a 1-1 draw in the group stages and here they ran out emphatic victors over the Group A winners.

Texas senator writes that father Rafael Cruz led a group of insurgents staging a sabotage against the Cuban dictator Batista and was eventually tortured

Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz’s father was a 1950s Cuban revolutionary who longed to slip into the island’s eastern mountains and join Fidel Castro’s guerrilla army.

At 17, Rafael Cruz led a group of insurgents staging urban sabotage against the Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista. Cruz was eventually jailed and tortured, and upon his release wanted the underground to help him personally reach Castro’s camp in the Sierra Maestra highlands.
