Introduction

This is a manual about how to access
and use online resources for Economics and Finance. It gives instructions on
how to use the internet for the benefit of your studies. However, it does not
provide all the available internet
sources since that it is impossible given the plethora of the web pages on the
internet. Nevertheless, it gives instructions for the most commonly used and
most popular sites, along with some references to other sites. Our web pages
include links to most of the sites that are listed in this manual. If one of
the links that is listed in the manual does not work, you are advised to access
it from these web pages. This is a hard copy and since the web sites change
addresses often, you may find this manual is not up to date after a couple of
months. Nevertheless, our web pages are updated almost daily

  Constructing a Subject Search

Journals online

University
Library

http://www.dur.ac.uk/library

The
web page of the University Library has been recently updated and upgraded. It
is easy to use and provides an excellent starting point when searching for
information and resources on the internet. It also provides information about
what is available in other nearby libraries (postgraduate and research students
are able to use the facilities of nearby universities’ libraries as well as to
borrow books[1]).
Moreover, there is a page dedicated to
Economics and Finance. Click on ‘Subject Information’ at the top left of
the next page and go to ‘Economics and Finance’, which will take you to this
page:

The
scope of this page is to be a “Library Home Page” for economics students.

Most
information which is relevant to you concerning the University can be found
here.

On
this site, you will be able to access the journals that the Library possesses.
Most of the journals in hard copy are available in electronic form as well.
However, not all journals are available in full text or provide access to
Durham users. In some cases, you will only be able to browse the titles and the
abstracts. Nevertheless, you will be able to find all the information that you
need regarding the journal on the library’s web page. In order to have full
access, you will need user names and passwords if you do not already have them.
To continue your search, click on the E-journals link and then once you have
reached the next page click on the Electronic Journal link.  The following
page will allow you to search for the journals you wish to access. You
will be able to search either by name or by subject. In searching by subject,
you will be presented with almost the entire list of all the journals that are
available in Economics and Accounting (please note that Economics, Finance and
Accounting journals are classified in the same category). The following screen
will appear:

Note
that you will have two options: ‘Connect’ and ‘Info’. With ‘Connect’ you will
be directed to the pages of the journal. ‘Info’ provides you with all the
information about the journal. You will be able to find the user name and
password if needed or if available to any Durham University user. Hence, direct
connection to sites with full text journals is only possible by PCs that are
connected to the university network or which stand alone with the network
access provided by the University. If you wish to access the journal pages from
outside the university go to ‘Info’ and click on ‘Online services for offsite
users’. In the window that appears
you will be asked to type your IT user name and password. You will then be
transferred to a page that will give you all the information that you need in
order to access the journal pages outside the university.

Most
of the downloadable journals are available only in PDF format, available from
all the network PC’s of the University. However, you may not be able to read
them from your home PC. You will need to download ACROBATâ READERä. Go to page:

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html

Finally,
the library has put on-line a comprehensive guide on how to discover
information in Economics:

http://www.dur.ac.uk/library/subject/econfin_resource.htm

Economics
Journals on the Web

http://www.oswego.edu/~economic/journals.htm

A
complete list of all the Economics journals. Please note that the University
does not provide access to all of them. You would not be able to obtain
documents from some of the journals listed. For a complete list of what the
University provides you should visit our library web page provided above. Moreover
you should be able to access other journals through search engines specialising
in Economics, Finance and Business journals. Links are listed on the next few
pages.

Web
of  Knowledge

http://wos.mimas.ac.uk/

Web of Knowledge  (WoK) is a citation data base. You will need
your ATHENS password.  With the WoK you
can:

Search the databases for published
works. View full bibliographic records and add them to your Marked List, from
which you can export them to bibliographic management software, save them to a
file, format them for printing, email them, and order the full text. Link
directly to other articles on the same topic as the one you are viewing, even
articles that have been published after the article you are viewing. Save your
search statements, which can be opened later and run again. Moreover, through
ISI Links, the WoK also offers access to electronic full-text journal articles,
genetic information, and chemical and patent databases.

After that you
log in (click on the red button WoK), the following screen will appear:

Go to ISI Web of Science
(WoS) and by using the “Full Search” option you will succeed in
obtaining the most complete retrieval.
You can e-mail marked records
(click on the button “mark" and then click on “mark list”.
Moreover, you will be able to save into a text file (.txt) the results
of your search by clicking on “save to file”.  By clicking on “notices”  you will find new information about the WoS.
Suppose that you select full search:

By default all the databases will be searched,
unless you define which database you want to search at the top of the page.
Then the dates that you want to look up have be entered and then press general
search. You will be transferred to the next page. There type in your search
statements separating the words with “AND” or “OR”.

Example: Say that you want to find out about the
paper by Fama “Efficient Capital Markets”. Type in the box that says “topic”
a keyword such as “efficient”. Then, type in the authors box “Fama”. You will
presented  with 2 papers by Fama that
contain in the keywords the word “efficient”. You can mark them all and press
the arrow that points to the right to continue or click on the paper  that you want to see. Then you will be able
to see how many papers have been cited and where the article is cited. You can
also have access to some of the papers that the paper is cited. From there you
will have the option to see related records by clicking on the button at the
right top of the page.

You can now e-mail marked
records -- look for the new button on the "Marked Records" page.
Please do not forget to log off when you finished your search.

A tutorial of how to use the
WoS can be found at:

 http://www.isinet.com/tutorials/webofscience5/

EconLit

With EconLit you can search
for reference of papers and journals on line. You can access it through the
Library’s web pages at:

 http://aesica.dur.ac.uk/delores/databases/databasessubject.asp?Subject=Economics

At the “select a topic or
database” scroll down to EconLIt and then press search.

You will be presented with
the basic search screen. You can go to the advance search page by clicking the
“advance” button on the left blue column. Similarly you can use the
“expert” search. As in other search engines you have to type in the keywords
and the author. The advance search option allows you to search within a time
period that you require, to put more keywords and  author phrase, codes etc, so it gives you a
more inclusive search facility.

Example: Say that you want to find out about the
paper by Fama “Efficient Capital Markets”. At the advance search, type in the
box that says “topic” a keywords such as “efficient”, and in an other
“capital”. Type in the authors box “Fama”, and then put the years that you want
to search (1980-2000) .You will presented with 6 papers by Fama that contain
the words efficient and capital. The two papers that you are interested in are
the “Efficient Capital Markets: “ A Review of Theory and Empirical work” and
the “Efficient Capital Markets II” . You can mark them and email them to your
account, or if you click on the paper you will have the abstract and the
downloaded format (if they are available). Moreover, you will be able to access
related topics by clicking on the topic that you are interested in on the “descriptor”.
Further, by clicking on the right pointed arrow at the bottom of the page, you
will be able to check if the article that you want is available in the
university’s library, and which other libraries possess this article. You will
also find any other information that you need (journal that is published, ISSN,
etc) so that you can order this article if not available in Durham.
