6.  Generalized Blockmodeling

by Patrick Doreian, Vladimir Batagelj, Anuska Ferligoj

Introduction:
Publication Date: November 8, 2004
After establishing its mathematical foundations, this integrated study of blockmodeling, the most frequently used technique in social network analysis, generalizes blockmodeling for the examination of many network structures. It also includes a broad introduction to cluster analysis. The authors propose direct optimizational approaches to blockmodeling which yield blockmodels that best fit the data, and create the potential for many generalizations and a deductive use of blockmodeling.

7. Governance of the American Economy
by John L. Campbell , J. Rogers Hollingsworth, Leon N. Lindberg May 31, 1991

Introduction:

In this tightly edited volume, a single theoretical framework is developed to explain institutional transformation in the governance of the U.S. economy in the twentieth century, and this framework is applied to case studies of eight American industries in various sectors: telecommunications, nuclear energy, railroads, steel automobiles, dairies, meatpacking, and hospitals. By "governance" the contributors refer to the systems of rules, procedures and norms that define ownership and control the means of production, govern transactions and determine the efficiency with which resources and information are allocated. An important new evolutionary model of the governance transformation process emerges, and a new perspective on the role of the state is developed, which argues that the volume addresses questions about the governance of capitalist economies in general.

8. Intercorporate Relations: The Structural Analysis of Business     by    Mark S. Mizruchi , Michael Schwartz (July 31, 1992)

Introduction:
Within the last decade, researchers studying business organizations have come to realize that corporate behaviour cannot be explained in terms of the actions of individual firms alone, and that in order to understand how businesses operate it is necessary to explore the relationships among them. This volume constitutes the first compilation of work by leading international scholars who have adopted a structural approach to the study of business, taking relations among companies as the fundamental unit of analysis, and examining the behaviour of individual firms within that framework. In their introduction to the volume, the editors analyze the historical and intellectual context of this rapidly growing area of research. The essays that follow include position statements by leading spokespersons for the two major structural perspectives on intercorporate relations - the resource dependence and social class views; national studies of the comparative historical development of intercorporate structures in Britain, France and Germany; essays on markets, money, and relations between corporations and cities; analyses of business structures in Europe, Latin America, japan and the US; and a chapter on transnational business relations. The volume as a whole will demonstrate to a broader public the significance and value of a structural approach to business studies, and will appeal to sociologists, organization theorists, business scholars, economists, political scientists, and business historians.

9. Japan's Network Economy: Structure, Persistence, and Change

by  James R. Lincoln , Michael L. Gerlach(Aug 16, 2004)

Introduction:
Japan's economy has long been described as network-centric. A web of stable, reciprocated relations among banks, firms, and ministries, is thought to play an important role in Japan's ability to navigate smoothly around economic shocks. Now those networks are widely blamed for Japan's faltering competitiveness. This book applies structural sociology to a study of how the form and functioning of this network economy has evolved from the prewar era to the late 90s. It asks whether, in the face of deregulation, globalization, and financial disintermediation, Japan's corporate networks - the keiretsu groupings particularly - have 'withered away', losing their cohesion and their historical function of supporting member firms in hard times. Using detailed quantitative and qualitative analysis, this book's conclusion is a qualified 'yes'. Relationships remain central to the Japanese way of business, but are much more subordinated to the competitive strategy of the enterprise than the network economy of the past.

10.  Legalizing Gender Inequality: Courts, Markets and Unequal Pay for Women in America
by    Robert L. Nelson , William P. Bridges  (May 28, 1999

Introduction:
Legalizing Gender Inequality challenges existing theories of gender inequality within economic, sociological, and legal organizations. The book argues that male-female earnings differentials cannot be explained adequately by market forces, principles of efficiency, or society-wide sexism. Rather it suggests that employing organizations tend to disadvantage holders of predominantly female jobs by denying them power in organizational politics and by reproducing male cultural advantages. These findings contradict major legal precedents which have argued that labor markets and not employers are the source of inequality. The authors further argue that comparable worth is an inappropriate remedy, as such an approach misdiagnoses the causes of gender inequality and often falls prey to the same organizational processes that initially generated this differential. The book argues that the courts have, by uncritically accepting the market explanation for male-female wage disparity, tended to legitimate and to legalize a crucial dimension of gender inequality in American society.

11. Models and Methods in Social Network Analysis

by    Peter J. Carrington, John Scott(Feb 7, 2005)

Introduction:
Models and Methods in Social Network Analysis presents the most important developments in quantitative models and methods for analyzing social network data that have appeared during the 1990s. Intended as a complement to Wasserman and Faust's Social Network Analysis: Methods and Applications, it is a collection of articles by leading methodologists reviewing advances in their particular areas of network methods. Reviewed are advances in network measurement, network sampling, the analysis of centrality, positional analysis or blockmodelling, the analysis of diffusion through networks, the analysis of affiliation or 'two-mode' networks, the theory of random graphs, dependence graphs, exponential families of random graphs, the analysis of longitudinal network data, graphical techniques for exploring network data, and software for the analysis of social networks.

Contents:
1 Introduction 1
2 Recent Developments in Network Measurement 8
3 Network Sampling and Model Fitting 31

12. Placing Friendship in Context      by Rebecca G. Adams , Graham Allan(Jan 28, 1999

Introduction:
Personal relationships have long been of central interest to social scientists, but the subject of friendship has been relatively neglected. Moreover, most studies of friendship have been social psychological. Placing Friendship in Context, first published in 1999, is a unique collection bridging social psychological and social structural research to advance understanding of this important subject. In it, some of the world's leading researchers explore the social and historical contexts in which friendships and other similar informal ties develop and how it is that these contexts shape the form and substance the relationships assume. Together, they demonstrate that friendship cannot be understood from individualistic or dyadic perspectives alone, but is a relationship significantly influenced by the environment in which it is generated. By analysing the ways in which friendships articulate with the social structures in which they are embedded, Placing Friendship in Context redescribes such personal relationships at both the macro and the micro level.

13. Political Networks: The Structural Perspective
      by    David Knoke(Aug 31, 1990)

Introduction:
This book examines almost two decades of research using the structural or network approach to political behaviour. Network analysis begins with the assumption that the most important elements of political power are the relationships of influence and domination among social actors. Influence is exchange of information about preferences and intentions; domination is the exchange of material sanctions to reward or punish compliance with commands. By examining the confluence of these two networks, analysts can develop a structural picture of the political process.
