The book introduces a new approach to macroeconomics based onendogenousmarket structures (EMSs), with a close focus on businesscycles,international trade and policy and growth. Chapter 1 reviewsthestandard neoclassical approach to macroeconomics. Chapter 2 extendsitto EMSs with strategic interactions and endogenous entry offirms.Chapter 3 introduces EMSs in a model of the business cycle, showsthatthey allow us to outperform RBC models in explaining thecyclicalvariability of US data, and studies fiscal and monetary policy.Chapter4 introduces EMSs in international trade, applies them to adynamicframework and derives implications for trade policy, R&Dpolicy andexchange rate policy. Chapter 5 introduces EMSs in thecompetition forthe market and in the theory of Schumpeterian growth andprovides anempirical test of the EMSs approach. Chapter 6 concludeswith anon-technical discussion of the main results and employs themtodiscuss a number of recently debated issues.
Prof. Federico Etro teaches macroeconomics at the University ofMilan,Bicocca and industrial organization at the University ofEdinburgh forthe Scottish Graduate Programme in Economics. He studiedat the U.C.L.A. and Harvard, and wrote articles for American EconomicReview,International Economic Review, Economic Journal, JournalofMacroeconomics, Public Choice and the book "Competition,Innovation,and Antitrust" (2007, ).
