很多学生都分享过他们把英文「张冠李戴」的惨痛经验。
在路上开车，遇到警察拦车说pull over，还以为他要你「拉什么」？其实他是要你停下来。英国人说Give me a ring. 可不是要你跟他求婚，"ring"是电话铃声，叫你打个电话给他而已。Drop me a line. 更不是要你排队站好，是留个口信。老美说，Mary is expecting in June. 你别以为Mary在期待六月，这是在说她六月要生小孩了。
哇，怎么那么复杂？其实搞懂意思，你会有茅塞顿开的感觉。一起来看看以下十个例子。
1、be on the map
The Group has been on the map for over ten years.（该集团已经出名十几年了。）
be on the map表示著名。看看很多城市地图，只有著名的企业才能标在上面。
2、face the music
You’ve been caught cheating, now you must face the music.（你的骗局已经被戳破，这下子吃不了兜着走。）
face the music表示自食其果。马上就要吃苦头，还说是听音乐，这是英式幽默！
3、be off-limits
The public transportation have been off-limits for several days.（公共运输系统已经停止运作好几天了。）
be off-limits意思是关门（closed）或不营业（not available）。
4、be above/over one’s head
Most of what the speaker said was above my head, so I fell asleep.（演讲者说的我大多不懂，所以就睡着了。）
be above/over one’s head在这里表示不能为某人所理解。
5、be after/at/onto someone to do something
My son has been after me for a year to buy him a laptop.（我儿子缠了一年要我买一台笔电。）
be after/at/onto someone to do something这里意思是一再要求某人去干什么事，不达目的绝不罢休。
6、be by
I’ll be by in the morning and see what I can do.（我明天早上过来看看能帮点什么。）
这里be by表示拜访或到达之意。
7、bring something into focus
Now that all sides of the question are in focus, can we please reach a decision? （既然事情的各方面都清楚了，我们做个决定吧？）
be in focus表示事情清楚明白，而bring something into focus则表示使事情清楚明白。
8、get by
I’ll get by with a bicycle until we can afford a car. (在买得起小汽车之前骑自行车也将就了。) 这里get by表示日子过得去，就是口头上常说的凑合、将就。
9、put up
All the office workers believe that the appointment of the new director was put up. (办公室的人都知道新主任的任命已经内定了。)
这里put up表示秘密安排某事。
10、Hang in there. = Don't give up. = Keep trying.（再坚持一下。)
