Prestigiousscholarships are among the most well-known and most generous scholarships, butare also the most competitive. They are national or international in scope.Winning one of these awards marks you with a stamp of excellence that can opendoors. Buick AchieversScholarship Program
The Buick Achievers Scholarship Program, funded by the GM Foundation, isdesigned to help students who are leaders in both the classroom and theircommunities, but who may not have the financial means to attend college. TheBuick Achievers Scholarship Program is open to high school seniors or collegeundergraduate students who plan to major in a specified course of study thatfocuses on Engineering/Technology or select Design and Business-relatedprograms at an accredited four-year US college or university. Scholarships willbe awarded based on participation and leadership in community and schoolactivities, interest in the automotive industry, academic achievement andfinancial need. Special consideration will be given to those who are afirst-generation college student, female, minority, military veteran or adependent of military personnel.

Robert C. Byrd Honors ScholarshipProgram
The Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship program is funded by the federalgovernment and administered by the state governments in each state. This meritscholarship program is open to high school seniors. Students apply through theState education agency in their state of legal residence. Each state has itsown deadlines.

Coca-Cola Scholars ProgramScholarship
The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation Scholarships are open to US high schoolseniors who have a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.Recipients are selected based on leadership, character, civic andextracurricular activities, academic excellence, and community service. This isan extremely competitive program, with more than 100,000 applications receivedeach year.

Collegiate Inventors Competition
The Collegiate Inventors Competition to encourage undergraduate and graduatestudents to pursue new ideas, processes and technological innovations. Theinvention must have been reduced to practice and patentable. It may not havebeen made available to the public as a commercial product or process or beenpatented or published more than one year prior to the date of submission to thecompetition. Submissions are judged on originality and inventiveness, as wellas on their potential value to society (socially, environmentally, andeconomically), and on the range or scope of use.

Davidson Fellows
Davidson Fellowships are awarded by the Davidson Institute for Talent Developmentto US students under age 18 who have completed a significant piece of work inthe fields of Mathematics, Science, Technology, Music, Literature, Philosophyor Outside the Box. The significant piece of work should have the potential tobenefit society. The focus of the program is on gifted and talented students.

Elks National Most Valuable StudentCompetition
The Elks National Foundation “Most Valuable Student” Competition awards 500four-year scholarships to high school seniors. US citizenship is required.(Resident alien status does not qualify.)

Gates Millennium Scholars
The Gates Millennium Scholarship program is sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and administered by the United Negro College Fund.Nomination by a professional educator (principal, teacher, guidance counselor,etc.) is required. The focus of this program is on students who will bepursuing careers in mathematics, science, engineering, education or libraryscience. Candidates must be African America, American Indian/Alaskan Native,Asian Pacific Islander American, or Hispanic American, a US citizen orpermanent resident/national, have a cumulative GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale, and be enteringa US accredited college or university as a full-time degree-seeking freshman inthe fall.

Benjamin A. Gilman InternationalScholarship
Established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000, the GilmanScholarship aims to diversify and expand participation in international studyby supporting undergraduate students who have been traditionallyunderrepresented in study abroad, including students with high financial need,community college students, students in underrepresented fields such as thesciences and engineering, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, studentswith disabilities, and students of nontraditional age. The program alsoencourages students to choose nontraditional study abroad destinations,especially those outside of Western Europe and Australia.

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship
The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship program was established in 1986 by theUnited States Congress to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater. Up to 300 GoldwaterScholarships are awarded each year. The scholarships cover tuition, fees,books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year. (The scholarshipis renewable for students who receive it during their junior year of college.)Each four-year institution may nominate up to four students who are currentlysophomores or juniors for the award. Second-year students who are currentlyenrolled in a two-year college but intend to transfer to a four-year college oruniversity are also eligible. The students must intend to pursue careers inmath, science or engineering.

Ernest F. HollingsScholarship (NOAA)
The Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship was established in 2005 by the National Oceanic andAtmospheric Administration (NOAA) to honor retired Senator Ernest F.Hollings of South Carolina who promoted ocean research and the study of ouratmosphere throughout his career. The program supports a variety of majorsrelated to oceanic and atmospheric science, research, technology and education,including earth, environmental and marine sciences, biology, agriculturalscience, life sciences, mathematics, computer science, physical science,engineering, social and behavioral sciences, and teacher education.

Intel Science TalentSearch
The Intel Science Talent Search, formerly known as the Westinghouse ScienceTalent Search, is one of the most prestigious scientific research competitionsfor high school seniors in the United States. Winners are selected on the basisof their potential as future scientists and researchers. Each year 300 studentsare named semifinalists and receive a $1,000 award. 40 of the semifinalists arenamed finalists and are invited on an all-expense-paid trip to the ScienceTalent Institute in Washington, DC in March, where the winners are selected.

Intel InternationalScience and Engineering Fair
The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF)is the world’s largest science fair. Each year more than 1,200 students ingrades 9-12 from more than 40 countries are selected at regional science fairsto compete at the ISEF for more than $3 million inscholarships and prizes.

NIH Undergraduate Scholarship Program
The NIH Undergraduate Scholarship Program (UGSP)is a competitive scholarship program sponsored by the National Institutes ofHealth (NIH) for students from disadvantaged backgroundswho are interested in pursuing biomedical, behavioral and social sciencecareers at the NIH.

National Merit Scholarship Corporation
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC)sponsors the National Merit Scholarships and National Achievement Scholarships programs. These are among the largestscholarship competitions in the United States, with more than 10,000 studentsreceiving college scholarships totalling $47 million. High school studentsenter the competitions by taking the PSAT test, also referred to as the NationalMerit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT).

Presidential Scholars Program
The Presidential Scholars Program provides recognition (but no scholarshipfunding) for up to 121 high school seniors each year on the basis of academicachievement. An additional 20 students each year are selected on the basis ofscholarship in the visual arts, performing arts or creative writing. UScitizenship is required.

Ronald Reagan College LeadersScholarship Program
The Ronald Reagan College Leaders Scholarship Program is sponsored by thePhillips Foundation. It provides scholarships to college undergraduate studentswho demonstrate "leadership on behalf of the cause of freedom, Americanvalues and constitutional principles.”

Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships
The Rotary Foundation’s Ambassadorial Scholarship program providesapproximately 1,000 to 1,100 scholarships for study abroad each year. Thescholarships are available for undergraduate and graduate students worldwide.(Applicants must be citizens of a country in which there is a Rotary club.)Candidates must have completed at least two years of college. Applications aremade through the local Rotary club. Each Rotary club has its own deadlines.

Siemens Westinghouse Competition inMath, Science and Technology
The Siemens Westinghouse Competition is one of the most prestigious scientificresearch competitions for high school students in the United States. Studentssubmit research reports individually or in teams of two or three. Some of theprojects are selected for further competition in six regional events. Oneindividual and one team are selected as Regional Winners and are invited toparticipate in the National Competition.

Morris K. UdallFoundation Undergraduate Scholarship
The Morris K. Udall Foundation awards50 undergraduate scholarships of up to $5,000 to college juniors and seniors infields related to the environment.

Xerox Technical Minority ScholarshipProgram
