Thresholdlinkagesbetweenvolatilityandtradingvolume:evidencefromdevelopedandemergingmarketsAuthorInfo：JawadiFredjUreche-RangauLoredanaAbstractThispaperstudiesvolatilitydynamicsandprovidesfurtherinsightsintoitsrelationshipwithtradingvolume.Inparticular,weexaminewhethertradingvolumeissignificantlyinformativeforinvestorswhenattemptingtoapprehendpotentialchangesinvolatilitydynamics,andhence,intheevolutionofmarketrisk.Tothisend,weapplyrecentnonlinearmodelingtools,namelySwitchingTransitionRegression(STR)modelsthatarerobusttoasymmetryandnonlinearityaswellasTARCHmodelstocheckforthenatureoftransitionbetweenvolatilityregimes.Ourfindingsshowthatvolatilitydynamicsexhibitnonlinearityandswitchingregimesforwhichthetransitionissmoothratherthanabrupt.Furthermore,oneregimeisassociatedwithlowvolatilityandaweakrelationshipwithtradingvolumewhileinthesecondregime,thecausalityrelationshipisstrongerandvolatilityishigh.Thepaper’snoveltyistoshowthatnotonlydoestradingvolumecontributetoexplainingmarketvolatility,butalsothatthechangeinvolatilitydynamicsisperformedthroughthechangeinitsrelationshipwithtradingvolume.

Weperformaseriesofsensitivityanalysestoverifythatourresultsarenotdrivenbyfirmattributescorrelatedwithownershipstatusorbysectorcharacteristicscorrelatedwithfinancialvulnerability.Thepatternswedocumentarerobusttocontrollingforsectors’technologicalsophistication,contractintensity,andphysicalandhumancapitalintensity,whichcanaffectthesectoralcompositionofMNCactivityforreasonsotherthanfinancialconsiderations.SincebiggerChinesefirmsmightenjoyeasieraccesstoexternalcapital,wefurtherconfirmthattheroleofforeignownershipinmitigatingtheeffectsofcreditconstraintsonexportperformanceisindependentfromthatoffirmsize.Finally,weprovideevidencethattheadvantageofjointventuresandMNCaffiliatesoverprivatedomesticfirmsinfinanciallyvulnerableindustriesisparticularlystrongwhenexportingismorecostly.Specifically,weshowthattherelativeperformanceofforeign-ownedcompaniesinsuchsectorsissystematicallybetterwhenthedestinationmarketismoredistantorhashigherentrycosts.
