2013托福阅读模拟题(18)　　The war for independence from Britain was a long and economically costly conflict（脱离英国的独立战争是历时长久，而且在经济上付出很大代价的战争。）. The New England fishing industry was temporarily（暂时地） destroyed, and the tobacco colonies in the South were also hard hit. The trade in imports was severely affected, since the war was fought against the country that previously monopolized（垄断） the colonies’ supply of manufactured goods（工业制成品）. The most serious consequences were felt in the cities, whose existence depended on （依赖=rely on =count on）commercial activity. Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Charleston were all occupied(被…占有) for a time by British troops. Even when the troops had left, British ships lurked in the harbors （潜伏在海港）and continued to disrupt trade.（扰乱贸易）
　　American income from shipbuilding（造船） and commerce declined abruptly（急剧减少）, undermining（破坏） the entire economy of the urban areas. The decline in trade brought a fall in the American standard of living（导致了美国生活水平的降低）. Unemployed shipwrights, dock laborers, and coopers drifted off to find work on farms and in small villages. Some of them joined the Continental army, or if they were loyal to（对…忠诚的） Britain, they departed with（与…分离） the British forces. The population of the New York City declined from 21,000 in 1774 to less than half that number only nine years later in 1783.

1.      题目的意思是“为什么作者提到工业革命的完成以及鸦片殖民地？”
很明显，在文章开头第一句话“The war for independence from Britain was a long and economically costly conflict.”，后面紧接着就是讲的“the fishing industry and the tobacco colonies”，所以作者的目的就是用此来表明独立战争对于经济的影响。因此选A。B的意思是“对比两个不同地区的经济实力”。C的意思是“为了确定在美国最大的商贸企业”。D的意思是“来举例说明被英国控制的工业”。
2.      题目的意思是“为什么在第二段，作者提及纽约的人口？”文中第二段最后一句话，提到了美国纽约的人口问题，因为全文都是在讲独立战争，因此，第二段整体来说，讲的是独立战争给美国造成的严重后果，所以纽约人口问题，也是在强调纽约战争的严重代价。所以，选C。
