You raised the good point, but not many friends here understand it or accept it, because 3 years for a master degree has already defaulted in their mindset. I always have a question that when 4 years for a full time PhD, why it takes 3 years for a master degree, what for?

For training. The career that you can develop after receiving the PhD can have strong tension to the training you have received. I've seen many PhD candidates in UK struggling with their research only because they lack the training that should have been taken in a master's course. This is in fact the advantage of master's students graduating from top universities in China.

BTW: there is a selection bias in this comparison.

You have raised two issues:

1) No one would deny that 3 yr master program can give student better preparation for PhD study than 2 or 1 yr master program can do. However, do you know how many % of master student would like (or qualified) to go for another 4 years of PhD study--less than 15% in overall (or much less). For those simply want to have a master degree but not PhD student, it does not make sense to have them consumed their 1 or 2 more years (opportunity costs) for so-called PhD preparation which is not necessary for them at all.

2) On the other hand, the time frame for a full time PhD program is usually 4 years. For a student who have qualification and competence to do a PhD program, 4 whole years is already long enough to pick up whatever needed to complete his/her dissertation.  Of course, from some professors' perspective, they quite welcome those with "better preparation" chinese students, because they can have "cheaper research labour force" for 4 whole years while those from US, UK or other western would unlikely do that (or not so well-prepared to do that). However, when we look at the passing rate of PhD in US, UK or other western universities, there is no clear advantage from Chinese students over others.

From my own view, I would like to min. the opportunity costs to those Master students, and request those Master student, who want to study further to PhD program, to work more harder in their next 4 years school life.

According to my experience, four years are far from enough for a student to prepare well for conducting his/her own research if he/she starts with no experience and training at all. However, experience can also take the risk that some inappropriate training can result in a further delay on his/her progress pursuing the PhD and later the career development.

Taking a PhD or master, is not only something like cost and benefit. To solve such a judgement, it is essential to identify first what you really want. In fact, I have come across numerous students (especially those Chinese ones) starting their PhD without any fundamental knowledge that they are expected to have before taking steps on their PhD. That's really a tragedy.

Too many Chinese students taking the PhD as a way to their honor rather than a true appreciation toward research.

Better don't look at this issue from PhD perspective (though both of us are PhD). Think about it--it does not make sense to "force" more than 85 % (or even more) of Master student do their master program in three years just because some of the remaining 15% (or even less) students want to have better preparation for their further study -- PhD.

By the way, 4 years Full time PhD is well accepted to US/UK and other western countries for a long time (even HK http://www.fbe.hku.hk/Programme/ ... e=Programme_Details), which is well established system. Those PhD student can complete their PhD within 4 years or even a bit longer. Some of my friends did their PhD in more than 4 years because they were already recruited to some MNCs in their final year as consultants and they switch their study mode from full time to part time mode, and they quite enjoy extend their PhD period since they can access some more education institution resources (i.e. analysis software, research papers, etc). PhD journey is never easy one, no pain no gain is the general rule!

Finally, I am not saying which education system is better, but I am just concerned whether this student who are interested (or cannot afford to) do PhD can save their time to complete their Master program--there should be an option to them anyway.

By the way, I agree you final point that "Too many Chinese students taking the PhD as a way to their honor rather than a true appreciation toward research."

In fact, PhD is NEVER an easy program which is for someone who is capable to do the program. Usually, universities select its PhD student with strict requirements, and finally a few can be the lucky one. Some info I posted here for example:

The City University of HK (http://www.cityu.edu.hk/), the academic staff is listed as below:

http://www.cb.cityu.edu.hk/ef/people/academic/ --mor than 30 Regular academic staff (excluding visiting staff) for Econ faculty, but only have 20 Phd students (http://www.cb.cityu.edu.hk/ef/people/research_student/) in these 4 years period, which means each year it takes more or less 5 PhD candidates only.

PhD is never for someone who are interested in, but for someone who is capable to take its research challenges. It should NOT be an easy program. You and I suffered it before, right. I would never forget this nightmare, so tough, but I enjoy it! Do you?
