The global IT security market is a $50bn+ market, with IT security software and services a
$14.5bn/year market focused on protecting information and information systems from
unauthorised access, use, disclosure, disruption, modification or destruction. Investments in
IT security make good business sense as the Pareto principle (80-20 rule) applies, with 80%+
of breaches avoidable through reasonable controls.
􀁑 The IT security market is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 15-20% from 2008-2012e becoming
a $16bn+ market in 2010e and a $30bn market by 2020e. This is not to say the sector is
recession-proof – clearly, IT security budgets were under scrutiny and revision in 2008 and
2009 with a resulting hit on IT security players’ margins. However, IT security spending has
held up well as it is largely non-discretionary — a mark of resilience for investors.
􀁑 IT spending is back on the rise with 5% growth expected for 2010. We are seeing the
beginning of a new cycle where IT spending is expected to grow at rates approaching those
of the 1992-2000. Cyber-security should be one of the biggest recipients of these spending
trends given the changing IT landscape, ever growing list of emerging threats, rising
government and regulatory spending and the growing links between IT and homeland
security.
􀁑 To date, the industry has been dominated by the big-five of EMC, IBM, McAfee, Symantec and
Trend Micro – although their market share has been falling in favour of smaller niche players.
IT security remains a dynamic market where smaller players, new entrants and specialist
vendors can challenge established leaders
􀁑 We anticipate that “hardware” and software powerhouses are likely to continue to step up their
efforts (i.e. companies like IBM and Oracle are likely to seek to grow organically and via
acquisitions, as well as offering their own solutions integrated into proprietary
infrastructures). We are also likely to see a move towards consolidation in 2010 and 2011e.
