Matteo Salvini’s?latest power grab in Italy ended in humiliation, as his right-wing populist party lost a crucial regional election, breathing new life into the ruling coalition. Italian bonds surged.
The center-left Democratic Party saw off a challenge from Salvini’s League in the northern Emilia-Romagna region, a leftist stronghold for decades.
The PD, a partner in Prime Minister?Giuseppe Conte’s?ruling coalition, won 51% of the vote against 44% for the center-right, Interior Ministry figures showed.
The result was a blow to populists both in the opposition and within the government. The anti-establishment Five Star Movement, the biggest partner in Conte’s coalition, scored just 5%. That will likely prompt the Democrats to demand more say over a new government program Conte will draw up in the aftermath of the vote.
Salvini’s failure could also stabilize Conte’s fragile alliance, reducing the possibility of early general elections. But skirmishes are likely to continue to plague the administration, with Five Star embroiled in a leadership crisis after Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio?resigned?as political leader last week.
