China made its biggest-ever purchase of American pork as a deadly disease sweeping through the Asian nation’s herd boosts demand for imports. Chicago hog futures jumped.

The U.S. sold 77,700 metric tons of pork to China in the week ended April 4 even as tariffs imposed on American hogs remain in place, according to data released Thursday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The purchase came as African swine fever has spread to almost all of China, the world’s top pork consumer. The disease isn’t known to harm humans.

Weekly pork export sales were “astonishingly huge,” said Dennis Smith, a senior livestock analyst and broker at Archer Financial Services. “Anyone that had any questions about the situation in China should take note. I calculate the Chinese portion of exports the equivalent of about 1.1 million pigs.”

The purchase sent hog futures traded in Chicago up by 3 cents a pound, the maximum allowed by the exchange. The contract for June settlement reached 99.45 cents a pound before easing back to 98.325 at 9:04 a.m. local time.

The sale to China was the equivalent of about 45 percent of last week’s American production, Smith said.

The U.S. also reported sales to South Korea, Chile, Japan and Canada, while its main market Mexico remained largely absent. Total sales came to 90,700 tons, the bigge
