The J.P. Morgan and Chartered Secretaries Australia Australian
Registry Service Provider Survey 2010 provides an overview of the
current state of the Australian registry service industry, the direction of
the industry and the competitive dynamics within the industry.
• The report collates data from surveys of companies in the
S&P/ASX200 conducted from December 2009 to February 2010.
• The key findings from the survey were:
• The expertise of the registry service provider remains the most
important factor in the company’s eyes in determining which service
provider, ahead of the overall cost of the service.
• Despite the significant decline and volatility in equity markets,
shareholder numbers have increased over the last 2 years.
• The customer base is extremely sticky with only 27% of respondents
putting the registry contract out to a competitive tender process upon
expiry. Additionally, only ~5% of the Australian market has changed
hands over the last 3 years due to direct competition.
• Link received a higher percentage of positive responses for overall
performance (and no negative responses) than Computershare.
• With only 52% of respondents believing the registry service provider
“adds value” to their business, cross-sell of additional services by
registry providers remains difficult.
• 2009 was a very profitable year for registry service providers given
the large number of “one-off” transactions, priced on a specific basis.
• Computershare, the largest listed registry service provider, generates
~20% of group revenue in Australia.
