英国汽车制造商引领供应商进入中国 China fuels revival for motor suppliers

A Chinese company yesterday opened one of the world’s biggest motor press shops for large car parts — with the help of 40 engineers from Coventry.

在来自英国考文垂的40名工程师帮助下,一家中国公司昨日开启了世界最大的冲压生产线之一,生产大型汽车部件。

Shandong Yongtai in northern China, a privately owned industrial group, is using the skills and knowhow of Covpress, a 100-year-old West Midlands precision metal pressing company it acquired in 2013.

私有制造企业山东永泰(Shandong Yongtai)将利用英国考普莱公司(Covpress)的技术和专业知识,后者是它在2013年收购的一家位于英国西米德兰兹(West Midlands)的精密金属冲压公司,已有百年历史。

The link has already transformed the fortunes of the UK company, resulting in increased investment and a near-50 per cent rise in its workforce. Turnover is up 70 per cent in the two years since the takeover.

The Covpress plant in Shandong province, when operational in March, will have the capacity to produce £1.5bn worth of pressings a year, more than 10 times the size of the UK operation.

Kit Halliday, joint chief executive and 30 per cent shareholder in the Coventry company, says the group can now supply the global operations of all the big car manufacturers.

“If Yongtai only wanted to supply Chinese carmakers they could have done that without buying us. But we open doors for them,” he says.

The collaboration is just the latest example of growing Chinese interest in the UK motor sector.

Already four of China’s big carmakers have manufacturing or research and development operations in the UK. Shanghai Automotive, Changan and Lifan all own or work with UK technical centres while Geely, owner of the Volvo brand, manufactures the famous black London taxi, having bought Manganese Bronze in 2013.

The UK car market is enjoying record sales, with exports accounting for 85 per cent of the vehicles produced. However, the lack of suitable local suppliers has meant manufacturers import about 60 per cent of components by value, compared with 30 per cent in Germany.

Global manufacturers say they would like to increase the level of parts purchasing done in the UK.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders in November estimated there were £5bn worth of new business opportunities for UK supply chain companies, if they were ready to make the required investments.

Currently, around £11bn is spent with UK suppliers by global car manufacturers — but a report in 2012 by KPMG, the professional services firm, suggested this figure could double by 2016.

But UK supply chain companies are typically family-owned, risk-averse and much smaller than their German counterparts, with an average of 30 employees compared with 180 in Germany.

Recent decades have also seen a hollowing out, with press shops closing and the loss of key capabilities.

John Leech, a partner with KPMG and author of the report on the UK motor supply chain, says component makers have to internationalise to survice.

Mr Leech says much of the impetus is coming from companies such as Jaguar Land Rover, which has large operations in the UK but which is now also making cars under a joint venture in China for the local market. “The choice for companies like JLR is to find a local Chinese supplier or persuade their UK suppliers to follow them to China,” says Mr Leech.

Sertec, a components supplier in Birmingham, has a small contract toolmaking operation in China and is understood to be considering setting up a manufacturing operation to supply JLR.

“Local content rules means we have to be there,” says Grant Adams, Sertec chief executive.

Delcam, which makes design software for motor toolmakers, went worldwide a long time ago, as the sourcing of component parts became more globalised.

“For us, where cars are made doesn’t have that much impact. We can supply companies making cars or car parts whether they’re in China, the UK, America, Brazil or Mexico. We basically follow the manufacturers around the world,” says Peter Dickin, marketing director.
