Tackling Taboo Topics: A Review of the Three Ms inWorking Women’s Lives

In NorthAmerica and Western Europe, women now compose almost half the workforce butstill face disparities in pay and promotions. We suggest that women’s naturalexperiences of the three Ms (i.e., menstruation, maternity, and menopause) aretaboo topics in ways that may constrain women’s careers. We propose that thethree Ms are particularly incongruent with expectations at intersecting careerstages (i.e., a job market newcomer having menstrual discomfort, an earlycareer professional breastfeeding, a company leader getting hot flashes), withimplications for work outcomes. In this review, we tackle the taboo of thethree Ms by reviewing the evidence for how menstruation, maternity, andmenopause are each linked to (1) hormonal and physiological changes, (2)societal beliefs and stereotypes, and (3) work affect, cognition, and behavior.We conclude by proposing novel implications for incorporating the three Ms intoexisting theoretical frameworks (i.e., work-nonwork spillover; stigma anddisclosure; occupational health) and presenting new research questions andpractices for understanding and addressing the ways that women’s healthintersects with career trajectories.

Over thepast years, media coverage of firms has received significant scholarlyattention. However, the resulting literature is spread across multipledisciplines and, therefore, varies with regard to its theoretical underpinningsand contextual settings. This makes it challenging for scholars to understandthe contributions of this literature, to identify areas of inquiry, and todevelop an encompassing research agenda. In this review, we address theseissues by surveying the diverse literature on media coverage of firms todevelop an integrative framework of the antecedents and consequences of mediacoverage that highlights paths for future research. Specifically, we identifythe three theoretical perspectives—economic, institutional, andsocial-psychological—that the literature generally assumes on the news media.In addition, we highlight differences between strategy, finance, governance,and crisis contexts and review results from articles examining media coverageof firms in aggregate. In each context, we identify the primary functions ofthe news media as well as antecedents and consequences of media coverage. Weproceed to develop an integrative framework for media coverage of firms bybuilding on these findings and by examining the empirical methods used tomeasure media coverage, particularly regarding the measurement of specificcoverage attributes. We highlight the gaps in current knowledge that ourframework exposes and derive opportunities for future research that can furtherscholars’ and practitioners’ understanding of firm media coverage.

Both macro-and micro-oriented researchers frequently use panel data where the outcome ofinterest is measured repeated times. Panel data support at least five differentmodeling frameworks (within, between, incremental/emergent, cross-level, andgrowth). Researchers from macro- and micro-oriented domains tend to differentiallyuse the frameworks and also use different analytic tools and terminology whenusing the same modeling framework. These differences have the potential toinhibit cross-discipline communication. In this review, we explore how macro-and microresearchers approach panel data with a specific emphasis on thetheoretical implications of choosing one framework versus another. Weillustrate how fixed-effects and random-effects models differ and how they aresimilar, and we conduct a thorough review of 142 articles that used panel datain leading management journals in 2017. Ultimately, our review identifies waysthat researchers can better employ fixed- and random-effects models, model timeas a meaningful predictor or ensure unobserved time heterogeneity is controlled,and align hypotheses to analytic choice. In the end, our goal is to helpfacilitate communication and theory development between macro- andmicro-oriented management researchers.

Electronicperformance monitoring (EPM) refers to the use of technological means toobserve, record, and analyze information that directly or indirectly relates tojob performance. The last comprehensive review of the EPM literature waspublished in 2000. Since 2000, dramatic advances in information technologieshave created an environment in which organizations are able to monitor employeesto a greater extent and with greater intensity than was previously possible.Moreover, since that time, considerable research has been devoted tounderstanding the effects of EPM on individual performance and attitudes.Contradictory findings in the EPM literature exist, suggesting that EPM is amultidimensional phenomenon and one for which contextual and psychologicalvariables are pertinent. Thus, we propose a theory-based typology of EPMcharacteristics and use this typology as a framework to review the EPMliterature and identify an agenda for future research and practice.

Privacy inthe workplace is a pivotal concern for employees and employers. Employeesexpect to be in control of the personal information and access they provide tothe organization. Employers, however, expect extensive information regardingtheir employees as well as extensive access to employees’ presence. The chasmbetween these two often competing expectations has been magnified by regulatoryand technological trends. We begin the review by integrating viewpoints frommultiple disciplines to disentangle definitions of privacy and to delineate theprivacy contexts of information privacy and work environment privacy. We thenidentify the key stakeholders of privacy in the workplace and describe theirinterests. This discussion serves as a platform for our stakeholders’ privacycalculus model, which in turn provides a framework within which we reviewempirical findings on workplace privacy from organizational research andrelated disciplines and from which we identify gaps in the existing research.We then advance an extensive research agenda. Finally, we draw attention toemerging technologies and laws that have far-reaching implications foremployees and employers. Our review provides a road map for researchers andpractitioners to navigate the contested terrain of workplace privacy.
