SPSS Programming and Data Management: A Guide for SPSS and SAS® Users, Fourth Edition documents the wealth of functionality beneath the SPSS user interface. It includes detailed examples of command syntax, the Output Management System (OMS), and extending command syntax with the Python® programming language. The accompanying CD-ROM includes the command files, data files, and Python modules used in the book. The book also contains a chapter for SAS programmers, showing equivalent SPSS code for many common data management tasks. With knowledge gained from this book, you will be able to use the many tools available within SPSS to import data from almost any source, clean it, transform it, merge it with other data, and get it into the condition required to produce reliable models and informative results. You will also learn how to utilize the Python programming language to control the SPSS command stream, read from and write to the active dataset, and create custom output.

This fourth edition features a substantial expansion of the Python programming material and describes the new features available with SPSS 15.0. It includes extensive examples showing how to create new SPSS variables through Python and how to create pivot tables and other output objects in the SPSS Viewer.

This book reflects the work of many members of the SPSS staff, as well as that of SPSSX list member Raynald Levesque, whose examples formed the backbone of earlier editions and remain important in this edition.

If you are using SPSS 14.0 or earlier, we encourage you to upgrade to SPSS 15.0 to take advantage of the SPSS Programmability Extension™. The SPSS Programmability Extension was added in SPSS 14.0 and improved in SPSS 14.0.1, SPSS 15.0, and SPSS 15.0.1.
