A second theoretical approach emphasizes characteristicsof the marriage market, with the quantity and quality of potential mates the primaryinfluences on mate selection preferences. Individuals who are in anadvantageous position in the marriage market by having a surfeit of availablemates might have little motivation to expand their field of eligibles to those with dissimilar or otherwise undesirabletraits. In contrast, persons with relatively few marital alternatives, such aseducated black women, might respond not only by remaining unmarried but byenlarging the pool of persons they would consider marrying.

These two theoretical explanations-exchange theory andmarriage market theories- can be used to generate hypothesis linking varioussociodemographic characteristics to mate selection preferences. As argued above,for both men and women socioeconomic resources such as high earnings andeducation might lead to a more restricted preference set. Because exchangetheory suggests that these resources are more important for men’s bargainingpower, their impact on preferences should be stronger for men than for women.
